If you have any doubt that we live in the best of all possible worlds, take a look at this. The five (yes, five) shots in the single hole in the bull were put there during the NBRSA Nationals in St. Louis. They were fired by a contractor from California named Tom Libby, and his rifle of choice was a 6 PPC. The group measures .093-inch, and the big sockdolaper is, it was shot at 200 yards.
I am indebted to Mr. M. Coleman, gunsmith, raconteur, and philosopher, for the photo and the info.
Okay. I'm about to get a little rowdy. This week, someone forwarded me a news article about a 748-pound mako shark caught in South Florida. My initial thought was "there's been a lot bigger caught this year," but I checked it out anyway. After watching the video below and reading the story, I have decided that these guys deserve the title of "Most Amateur Idiots on the Water." See for yourself. They didn't "catch" anything. They free-gaffed a hot mako.
It wouldn't make me stop fishing. I know that the animals I hunt feel pain, but that hasn't made me stop hunting, you just need to be ethical about it. I don't purposely wing birds, I always go for a clean kill. Same thing with fishing, hook the fish, reel in, put it back in the water as fast as possible.
Who do you think is the most regimented, obsessive and detail-oriented group of "outdoorsy" people out there? The Latin-spouting entomologist fly angler? The micrometer-minded benchrest shooter? The trophy white-tail fanatic who analyzes terrabytes of trail cam data?
Last week, I got an email from loyal F&S reader Butch Cole. The photo you see below was attached. Butch writes: "I was wondering if I could trouble you to post a picture of this 50 inch muskie somewhere for the world to see. It was stolen from me. I had it on display in a local motel and apparently someone decided they needed it more than I did. I am offering a no questions asked reward for the return or the location of it. It was stolen in Park Rapids, Minnesota."
Who one Earth would steal someone's mount!? That is absolutely terrible. I only have one mount, a forty three inch musky, my first legal musky. I cought it when I was seventeen. I see big musky mounts all the time, but I have never once thought of stealing them. That is below low, whoever did that should be turned into Musky bait
Do we really need camo-pattern fishing rods? I was wondering that this morning while noting that the “best new rod” category at the recent ICAST fishing-trade show was won by a new rod series decked out in a variety of camouflage finishes. It just struck me that making a rod less visible is going to make me more likely to step on it or to shut the rod tip in a car door.
There is no practical use for having a camo fishing pole. It's all about flashy marketing, the fish don't care what you use. The only reason people would buy this pole is because they think it looks cool, that's it. I wouldn't waste my money on a $140 rod, the $50-60 rods are just fine with me, and catch fish, so I'm happy.
Four fishermen from South Carolina had a very unlucky Friday the 13th. That's when a state wildlife officer seized their catch [of over 1,000 fish, mostly shellcrackers] and charged them with going over their limit. . . .
Each angler is allowed just 50 fish per day, with a maximum of a two days' catch in possession.
They shouldn't be able to fish for life. it's people like them that give all of us a bad name and if they are going to blatantly ignore the rules they shouldn't be able to have the right to fish again. Rules are clearly stated in all DNR handbooks and the handbooks are available where ever licenses are sold. People need to know that if they break the rules they are going to get more than a slap on the wrist.
The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.
“As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons,” Holder told reporters.
I totally agree with you, Love2hunt. All of the conservatives and even moderates saw this coming from a mile away! Globalized health care will be horribly disfunctunal, just like everything else that the government touches. And we might as well kiss the second amendmant good bye! If this bill passes it will be just the begining! I dont mind the fact that the Democrats are for the environment, but it would really help if I had guns to use in it!!!! This CHANGE is a total JOKE!!!! Biggest mistake voters could have made!

Banning Assault rifles won't stop the trade of arms to Mexico. These people are DRUG TRAFFICKERS!!!! They doing things illegaly for a living!! Making Guns illegal wont stop them!! They don't give two cents about our government banning these guns, they'll still get them. It's just like drugs, they're illegal, but people still use them!!! You don't hear stories about coke addicts saying "Darn cocain is illegal, i guess we'd better stop using it." And if the government starts banning AR's that's just going to open the flood gates to other guns, such as the one's we use for providing food to our families. This is a JOKE!!! I wish our Congressmen and women would get a clue about the real world and what will actually happen if some of their bills pass.

Do You Care If Fish Feel Pain?40
This just in, courtesy of my friend John Kirk. A recent study apparently suggests that fish might indeed sense pain.
I know, I know... It's not really a breaking news item. After all, PETA and others have been on the "don't hurt the sea kittens" soap box for years.

Nope, nope and nope.
