  • How to Jump Shoot a Buck
    23

Tired of waiting in a stand? Too cold to sit still for hours on end? Try jump-shooting a buck. This is one of my favorite tactics when I’m exploring new territory and want to cover a lot of ground, but it’s also great on a known hunting area late in the season, when you’ve pushed bucks around and don’t know exactly where they are. Here’s the skinny:

Good Stuff! I try to sit in my tree stand until 10:00am,especially during gun season, then I do the "bump and jump"! I incorporate a bump into my jump to shoot a buck. Knowing and being intimate with the land allows for others to be along the escape path out of the line of fire. I utilize a Boonie Packer Sling that allows me to carry my gun at "port arms" at all times. Good article, that will result in more ways to hunt whitetail!

  • 31-Point Double Drop Tine Texas Buck is Kaufman County Game Warden's First With a Bow
    27

Editor's Note: We'd like to thank Martin Oviedo, a game warden with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Dallas County who partnered with Minter on the opening day of the Texas firearms deer season, for taking the photos of Minter in the field (slides 8-14 and 16-18).

Great Lookin' Buck ... Don't Mess With Texas!

  • 10-Point Buck Attacks Upstate New York Man
    25

And when I say upstate, I’m talking way upstate. Namely, Moira, NY—only a handful of miles from the Canadian border and just down the road from North Bangor, where I grew up. I can tell you, there is not a lot for the deer to do up there, so I’m not surprised to read about one getting into trouble, but this was uncalled for. From the Watertown Daily Times:

It probably was the wood throwing that attracted the attacking buck. Perhaps purchasing a gas or electric heater may deter the love lorn bucks in his area, if he doesn't take up huntin'.

  • Chad Love: Trail Cams in the Classroom
    13

Trail cameras are, for hunters, becoming so ubiquitous that we often don't think about their potential for other uses. I certainly never did until my son said he wanted one for Christmas, not for hunting, but to record all the various wildlife that travels through our rural back yard.

I thought it was a great idea, and in the broader context I thought it had real potential to get kids interested in the outdoors. But as I was perusing the excellent Southern Rockies Nature Blog recently I discovered a link to a teacher who had already figured that out.

Very innovative ... sign of the times!

  • More Details on the Sad Story of the Biggest Eight-Point Buck Ever Killed
    52

Last week, a giant whitetail was allegedly poached near the town of Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The buck’s antlers sported a highly symmetrical frame and is said to have green-scored 192 B&C, and netted 188”. The inside spread of 28-3/8” is mule-deer wide.

Lou Cornicelli, the Minnesota DNR big-game coordinator, had this comment about the monster buck ...

"Ask any veteran B&C scorer, and he’ll tell you to kill a “Booner” (a buck that qualifies for the B&C all-time awards minimum of 170” ), the buck better have at least ten tines, long main beams, and plenty of mass. Only a handful of 8-point whitetails have the right stuff to crack the B&C book." Just talked with Kentucky's Department of Wildlife biologist this past weekend, and he verified the exact statement above. The one and only way to punish poachers, is to hit 'em with a large fine, and publish their mug in every state's hunting regulations, deer expo's and on-line, through public humiliation. Let the real hunters publically scorn and benefit from their hefty fine!

  • Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin Buck Could Be New World Record Typical Whitetail
    32

Update: Jack Reneau over at Boone & Crockett's Trophy Watch blog tells us they think this buck will NOT score high enough to beat the Hansen buck. From the Trophy Watch site: Numerous recent articles have been brought to our attention claiming that this buck has a green score higher than the Milo Hansen World Record Typical.

That is a massive buck in all proportions! Now ... I'm jumping off of the F & S website, and I'm going to try and get me a big one! C'mon Out Monster!
