  • ST. CROIX LEGEND ULTRA RODS

    100% of 2 votes

This totally reworked rod series draws new strength from a
manufacturing process that evens out and strengthens the transition
areas within a rod's taper. These load and flex more smoothly,
making casting more fluid (improving your casting in general). They
come in four- and five-piece versions for line weights 4-10.

  • Gear Review: Four New Soft-Sided Tacklebags

    33% of 3 votes

Most soft tackle bags are more versatile than hard-plastic versions, but which ones carry heavy loads easily? Are they really waterproof? Can there be such a thing as too many pockets? Our readers tried to find out.

We asked manufacturers to provide our testers with multipurpose bags in the $100 range. Our panel filled the bags with their gear and hit the water, noting functionality, utility, and durability.

Nikon makes a wide range of binoculars, all of them at least good, and some of them superlative. These are plain-vanilla glasses that are, nonetheless, a great value.

2009 Best of the Best: Spinning Rods (Best of the Best) These midpriced graphite bass rods, made in North America, are technique-specific, with spinning versions designed for drop-shotting, wacky-rigging, and fishing tubes or grubs. (There are also nine baitcasting versions.) The one-piece models, nicely finished with premium-cork split grips, range from 6 feet 8 inches to 7 feet long. Gauging price against performance on the water, we found these to be an excellent value. -- JM

A writer friend, facing a mountain of slugs to test and a looming deadline, hired a college student, promising to teach the eager young lad the secrets of successful gun writing. "Your first job is to shoot all these slugs and bring me the targets," he said, then poured himself some more whiskey.

That's the best way to beat slug recoil.
