The Lowdown The most feature-rich model tested has a new system that optimizes fuel mixture over the entire rpm range to deliver maximum power. Stihl saws start up fast and are user-friendly. You can tighten the chain without tools, and the wide bar prevents overheating even in tough conditions.

Hits With a second chain brake system, this saw is extremely safe.

    Misses It’s expensive.

Who Should Buy Anyone who needs to do heavy cutting for long periods of time.

  • Montana Rifle Co. Model 1999: The Lefty Rifleman's Rifle

Winchester, as far as I know, has no plans for a southpaw Model 70. However, Montana Rifle Co. in Kalispell is making its own highly refined version of the Model 70, which it calls the Model 1999 (montanarifleco.com). You can get it in right- or left-hand, with a wood or synthetic stock, matte stainless or Teflon coated. I have one in .270, and it is truly a superior working rifle. Prices range from just under $2,100 to $4,500. —D.E.P.
