i was in your situation 2 years ago i started out with a single shot 20 ga but then i went with a semi- Auto 20 ga 870 in 20 is a great gun though.

if youre water source freezes look at full body mallards and geese if you are on a tight budget shells are fine. but definatly mostly mallards but just buy other common ducks and go with Greenhead gear

it will not damage the barrel but you will only have probably 40-50 yards out of it.

you shouldn't have to worry about the power because i have killed several pheasants with 20 gauge 2.3/4 with 7 shot. oh also with a skeet barrel. you should be fine with what you had and spare your shoulder

go with the penn captiva combo and put 12 pound bearkly big game line in green on it. it handles 10 pound stripers to nice bass .
