  • Merwin: Broken Rods and High-Sticking
    12

So I broke yet another rod yesterday when I got distracted somehow and our spring-loaded screen door slammed shut on the rod tip. Pretty stupid. I can get the rod tip replaced okay, so that’s not too big a deal, but breaking a fishing rod is always a little traumatic. It got me thinking of other breaks at other times.

  • Cermele: Are Marlin The Most Dangerous Fish?
    10

We've talked a lot in the past about the dangers of shark fishing. While lots of people have close calls boating threshers and makos, you don't often hear stories that result in hospitalization or bloodshed. I'd say that's because while sharks may have a mouth full of teeth, those teeth don't extend four feet out in front of their heads.

  • Merwin: More On Budget Tackle
    14

There’s been a lot of talk around here lately about budget-priced fishing gear, and even more discussion about how ostensibly silly it is to pay hundreds for simple things like reels. All this leads me to point out an interesting paradox when it comes to tackle and gear prices.

some expensive things perform better then cheap things its true

  • Merwin: A Little Lure Help, Please
    16

So I’ve lucked into an exotic bass-fishing trip to a place known for monster largemouths. I need some advice from you bass guys. Rods, reels, and line aren’t a problem. But I need some lure suggestions.

Understand that I usually travel very light, even on major fishing trips, so space is an issue. I’d like to haul a major tackle box, but that’s out. I’ve got maybe one cubic foot of space for lures. And I need to cover everything from topwaters to deep-running cranks to soft- plastics.

sexy shad is producing for me also senkos

  • Merwin: Lost Magic & Opening Day
    20

Today is the traditional Opening Day of trout season in New York state. It is also April Fool’s Day. Some will wisely assume the two are somehow connected.

The water temperature of the Beaverkill, that most famous of Catskill trout rivers,  this morning is 42 degrees. The weather forecast calls for cloudy skies with afternoon rain showers and air temperatures also in the 40s. It is a lovely day for playing cribbage by a warm wood stove; somewhat less lovely for trout fishing.

in fishing deffinetely but in hunting schools close down in some states for deer

  • Merwin: Stocker Psychology
    13

Fishermen tend to categorize fish as smart or dumb according to how easy those fish are to catch. Freshly stocked hatchery trout are usually seen as dumb. But I think they’re not so much dumb as ignorant, having learned about nothing but hatchery food pellets.

very true i am just getting in to trout fishing here in maryland.

  • Cermele: Flukin' Largemouth
    21

When sketchy weather or prior obligations keep me close to home on weekends, my attention turns to largemouth. For me, bass have always been a fish good for killing a few hours in the local lakes and ponds, but I have never traveled to chase them in famed waters. I am, however, happy to report that I caught my first of the season Sunday, and they were pretty aggressive even though the spawn is nearly two months away and the water is still darn cold.

you are absolutely right they are also weedless which is a plus

  • Merwin: Recipe for Smooth Drag
    9

After I posted a while ago about a very simple reel-drag test you can do at home, some readers asked about how to set a drag in the first place. Here are a few tips that will help. The general rule for freshwater reels spooled with nylon mono is to set your drag tension at one-third to one-half of your line’s breaking strength.

that might work better then tying your line to the back of the boat dont you think?

Montana native Maxx Martel found this 1858 muzzleloading rifle packed in bear grease in the hollow of a tree. How did it get there? Read the story here.
