Okay, okay, before you peg me as a purist who thinks all baiters are slobs, hear me out. If you watch a spin feeder or camp near a pile of sugar beets, I’m not going to attack your character or question your allegiance to the flag. But I do think that if you gave up the bait, we’d all be better off.
I've often said that, as a guide, if I forget my waders in the morning on the way to the river, I'll wet-wade in (almost) any season. But if I forget my sunglasses, I'll go back home and get them, and make up lost time at the end of the day. Shades are that important to me on the water... how about you?
Though I'm not sure it's going to continue, for the moment it's pretty warm outside. Kinda feels like spring is approaching. Not wanting to waste a 65-degree day in March, I made my first trip of the season to one of my favorite trout streams in Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains last weekend. And I was delighted to see bugs. Stoneflies were coming off, though not too heavily, and the trout were eating them, though not too heavily.
I completely agree with you Carmele. Fly fishing is about being smarter than the fish and fooling them with your flies and the presentation you give them. If you want to put scent on their, go get a lure or some live bait but dont cheat fly fishing.
The seventh-graders at Bordentown Regional Middle School in New Jersey are turning out some serious striper plugs in shop class. It's a project dreamt up by New Jersey teacher and angler Greg Poole, and with a little help from a master plug-maker and a group of kids genuinely interested in learning the craft, the result is some impressive poppers and Danny swimmers that any surfcaster worth his salt would agree will catch. This is their story.
I wish my Art II class did projects like this! Good job Mr. Poole for incorporating your love for the outdoors into your curriculum. I believe if more teachers thought like you do, there would be many more hunters and fishers in the US today.
Yesterday looked like it was going to be the first true day of spring skiing for myself and Ellie, my wife. We had driven two hours up to Vail, Colorado had spent the night and had gotten up early to get first tracks in the new snow. After three runs Ellie felt terribly ill and so nauseated that she couldn't ski anymore. We're figuring she came down with a very quick onset of stomach flu.
just a box of your favorite flies, a 4-piece 5wt rod and a matching real loaded with line, waders, spools loaded with line, average tools. Nothing special, after all it is an EMERGENCY fishing kit. It is very small as it is so few items so it is easily stowed.
The guns of O.F. Mossberg, New Haven, CT, are beloved by many and scorned by others. People love them and hate them for the same reason: they’re cheap. I hear them called “Mossjunks,” “Mossturds” and worse by haters. I call the Mossberg 835 in this picture “my turkey gun.” I can find no reason at all to dislike it, nor to switch to something more glamorous and expensive.
Nick Owens didn’t set out to do a good deed. He was just driving toward a tract of public land on the fourth day of Wisconsin’s firearms season. Then he noticed a young lady dressed in blaze orange. She was crying, her head cradled in one hand, the other clutched a cell phone. Owens pulled up, fearing the woman was in trouble.
The world would be a better place if there were more people like nick owens out there. He helped someone out of the kindness of his hart without expecting anything in return and refusing payment. Congrats and it is a well-earned award.

Seven Reasons to Stop Baiting Whitetails Now157

I think baiting for whitetails has to stop. Now.

How are they compared to Costa Del Mar?
