  • All Public-Land Deer Hunting DVDs
    20

I’ve been watching hunting videos for a couple of decades now and, for the most part, I consider myself a fan. While I won’t burn any hunting/outdoor (or other quality) time on watching other people hunt on TV, I’m happy to watch videos in the rare moments when I have nothing else going. And like many of you, I have my favorites; shows where the videography is great, the whitetails are pretty and the hunters portrayed seem like pleasant-enough individuals.

Nice to see people that are hunting on camera just for the love of it, instead of sponsorships and such. Too many shows try and show off the new products of the year, and it really does take away from the show.

  • 540 foot Cast: Real or Fake?
    28

A couple of weeks ago Steve Rajeff absolutely smashed the distance record for fly casting with a 243 foot cast in Toronto. Now obviously, throwing lures with some serious weight and a stiff spinning/baitcasting/surfcasting rod almost anybody could beat that distance, but the video above seems ludicrous. I have no idea what a country mile is, but if you do the math this guy's cast is 540 feet. Something tells me this is nonsense.  I mean the lure...

I say fake... a little too dramatic of a catch. Not to mention that I probably would not be able to even see the lure in the air, let alone catch it.

  • Bourjaily: Gas Guns for More Doves
    36

I once mentioned to a southerner that in Iowa where I live, mourning doves are protected songbirds.* “Ain’t worth livin’ there,” he said. Every year, on September 1, I think he might be right. Unless I manage a trip out of state, I am stuck on the sidelines for the biggest opening day of the season, rooting for all of you who are lucky enough to live where doves can be hunted.

Probably my favorite all time game dish besides venison italian sausage would be bacon rapped dove breasts. Probably some of the best game I have ever tasted.

  • Merwin: Avoid Hang-Ups in Shallow Streams
    13

Here’s one for the ultralight-spinning folks. Specifically, how to cast midget spinning lures into areas of very shallow water without getting stuck on the bottom.

The problem typically occurs in the low waters of late-summer or early-autumn trout or smallmouth-bass streams, where long and shallow clear pools are interspersed with short riffles.

Basically to get spinning before you lure even hits the water instead of taking your time to flip the bail and such.

  • “Mr. Buck” Poacher Claims Self-Defense, Then Pleads Guilty
    19

Yesterday, 27-year-old Brandon Eugene Gregory pleaded guilty to entering a Houston wildlife sanctuary and beheading a tame deer known as “Mr. Buck.” He did not originally claim full responsibility, however.

From the Houston Press’ Hair Balls blog:

Brandon Eugene Gregory [originally] claimed that the beheading was done in self-defense after Mr. Buck attacked him

I have heard quite a bit of excuses but this one ranks in my top 5. I take it that he decapitated the deer to show the officers what deer was responsible for charging him...

  • Discussion Topic: On Pennsylvania’s Crossbow Rules
    13

Crossbows will be legal during the Keystone State’s fall archery season. The only question is: How much of the archery season? In July, after having voted to allow them for the whole bow season, the state backpedaled and gave preliminary approval to a proposal that would limit their use to just the first two weeks.  Now, the Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners is planning to hold a special meeting on September 3rd to make a final decision.

Allow them for the entire season for those not able to use a bow... other than that, make a limited season on them for all "normal" users.

  • Petzal: A Parting Thought on Senator Kennedy
    178

Now that the news is all Ted, all the time (which at least is a relief from all Michael, all the time) and the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy is on his way to being Saint Teddy, we should remember that he was an implacable enemy of the Second Amendment, and that there never was an anti-gun law he did not like. Kennedy blamed guns for his brothers’ deaths. The reality is a little different.

Guns dont kill people, people kill people. Any law that restricts people from buying guns/pistols or anything of that sort will not help anything. The only people who will obey that law are the law abiding citizens. Those who actually commit the crimes, and give gun owners a bad rep, are not going to follow the laws no matter what. Outlawing guns/pistols or whatever would just take away guns from those who would defend themselves, giving the criminals an even bigger upper-hand.

That goes with the old saying that guns kill people and they are responsible for the many murders that happen in this country. The reality is, people kill people. If you make a law outlawing guns, the only people who are going to follow it are the law-abiding citizens, not the people who commit murders and crimes and such. Those gangster and criminals are always going to have their hands on guns no matter what the law. With a law outlawing guns, the only thing that does is take away the protection that many law abiding citizens have against such criminals.

  • Chad Love: Fake Survival Shows
    32

Telegenic, rock-jawed survival studs are all the rage on television. Bear Grylls  and Les Stroud are the most prominent. (Of the two it seems most F&S readers prefer Les to  Bear citing the fact that Les seems more genuine and doesn't make the rest of us feel fat and inadequate when he takes off his clothes.)

However, judging by your comments, many of you dislike survival shows altogether. While they can be ridiculous, I think anything that gets kids off their butts and interested in the outdoors can't be all bad.

I would go with Bear... i mean yeh it is fake but the guy has to actually know a little about something with all the shows he has done. I would not be laughing as much but I might just survive...might.

  • Cermele: Fish That Save The Day
    14

This Tuesday I caught a bunch of false albacore on the fly. They were boiling all around the boat. Ten of them would follow a hooked fish. Backing was stripped and knuckles nearly busted. Sounds great right? Of course it was, but the trip target was bluefin tuna. Let's just say that bite left a bit to be desired. Rather than pound sand over it, I found a day-saver in the albies. Day-savers, in truth, have made for some of my most memorable trips.

The biggest day saver for me were saltwater catwish... after our trip for pompanos and mangrove snapper did not work out so well, we went to a place where we thought there would be some catfish and had a blast catching cats for the rest of the night.
