from carcher on 03.16.10
9 Answers
carcher, If you are worried about testing gear you are in for a long haul. I hope after awhile you will understand the knowledge you recieve on here is priceless. Along the way you get friendship and knowledge and too most of us thats why we are on here. If you do happen to get selected for gear testing be honest. Say if you were honored to test a fly fishing rod and never fly fished before you can not give an honest answer to that can you? So decilne and wait till you can give a honest opinion. Long story short if you are here thinking you get to test gear for free you have a long line to stand in. So if you want to learn more about hunting and fishing you came to the right site, but if you just want to get free gear, I will save you the trouble, start looking for a different site. from Del in KS on 03.13.10

Thereis alot of mistunderstanding about the personality of the person. Some tattoos are fine like one in memory of a love one, butterfly and things of that nature. The ones that do bother me alittle are the ones that are gang related. Things like the gang sign or have a tear under your eye. So have a tattoo of animals I think its fine. I think that there should be a few laws about getting a tattoo. Like, you have to wait 48 hours after you go in a tattoo place to get it done. This way you can be sure that you want to have one. Also you can not be drunk when you get one. After all they are perarment.

I having a brain fart and can not remember the name of it but works slick. You have the handle then on the end and it has about 5-6 spikes that twist. kill all the freaking wolfs!! Our grand dads got rid of them for a reason! The old timers knew what they were doing!! For all the wolf lovers that had never had to deal with the wolf problem, write down your address here and I'm sure somebody would be more than happy to drop a pack of wolves on your front lawn. In 5 mintues the pack will eat your dog, and you will be the first one whining because the pack ate your dog. If you do not have to deal with the wolves like eating your live stock or killing your dogs then you have no say in this!! Now for the wolf lovers, lets say you lost your favorite pet cost 3,000 and it was killed by wolves I know you will change your opinion in a heart beat! LA is terrible about this because they don't have to deal with them. All they know is what they saw on TV, they can not show on TV the damage these things can do!!!!!!!!

Welcome to F&S big boy! LOL Well starting off bow hunting I would not go over board about spending lots of money. Try going on Ebay, lots of people wanted to try bowhunting and spend tons of money on equiment and find out they do not like it. Remember you need more than just a bow, you need sites, rest, arrows. Also nice to have camo stand and calls. All this can add up quickly. If your patience you will stumble on a heck of on deal on a package that has all of these. Also go to your local hunting store, preferrable a small local shop verus a big box store. They will have more knowledge and will be able to help you like telling how long of a draw you need and the poundage right for you. If I were you I will go with a used set-up for your first bow try it a few years and if you love bowhunting then upgrade to a new one.

So if they are counted to B&C I would heard about years ago. I really think to be qualify for B&C it has be fair chase so anybody has a chance. Also watching the video of him shooting it brought flags red flags up. 1) When deer hunting in WI with a gun you must wear blaze orange 2) You must also have to have a back tag visible from the rear. So no its not hunting so probably rich A$$hole doctor, lawyer, business man from Miller Town or chi-town. Most likely never shot a deer before but now calls him the greatest deer hunter. FIRST TIME HUNTER Two hunters go hunting, Jerry has never gone hunting while Joe has hunted all his life. When they get to the Wisconsin Northwoods, Joe tells Jerry to sit by a tree and not make a sound. While Joe went to check a deer stand, he got about 1/4 mile away he hears a blood-curdling scream. He rushes back to Jerry and yells, "I thought I told you to be quiet!" Jerry says, "Hey, I tried. I really really did. When those snakes crawled over me, I didn't make a sound. When that bear was breathing down my neck, I didn't make a peep. But when those 2 chipmunks crawled up my pant legs and said,'should we take them with us or eat them here?', I could'nt keep quiet anymore!"

If you have corn fields would be a start. Check the trails that lead from the corn field to the bedding area. When walking the trails pay attention in places with alot of brush, the slightest branch can nock it off. Fence line where the bucks have to jump over or go under. If the deer use the feilds all winter, in the spring when the snow is about an inch or so walk the field slowly keep your eyes on the ground. If I were you now I would head out to the woods and see(asumeing snow on the ground) were the deer are travling now and check back every week. Sheds are hard to find, so keep your eyes on the ground. Found 1 side of a nice 8 pointer this spring and in november my uncle found the other side. When you find your first shed you be hooked!! FUN!! FUN!! FUN!!

BioGuy hit on the head, I think you meant antlerless season. In WI to be an antler deer it's antlers have to be more than 3 inches to be considered an antler deer. Less than 3 inches it's considered an antlerless deer. So if a 10 pointer shed it's antlers it should be leagal to shoot it because the antlers are less than 3 inches(this case no inches at all) By march it will be able to see a little nomb where the new antlers are devopling. By the way what state are you in?

yeah the distance between the belly and the ground is your best way to get a rough size on the bear. Also the ears thing helps. We call the smaller younger bears Micky Mouse cause the ears stick up above the head some like Micky where as the bigger the bear the harder to see the ears.

I'm on Brittle side here. There has been a on going issues with WI DNR for years. This year really made them look really bad. Of course the DNR blamed it on the weather for the and standing corn for the low deer kill. Now standing corn might have a little affect but not the reason the the lowest in 27 years. One year they give you 2 free doe tags and the following year you have to pay 12 bucks for a single doe tag. I know they are doing their jobs but with the money they bring in from tags and fees they should be doing alot better than they are. Instead of doing most of their predictions on the computer rather than the field. They should really be doing is speding out surveys to land owners asking how many deer they see. This way they would get a more accurate count through out the state. Cause if the southern part of the state see this many does not mean the same for northern part. Also they have to elemaite the zone T hunts period!!!! The youth hunt I am all for it. Since the zone T hunts began there has been less and less deer. Hmmm I wonder why alot of hunters seen hardly any deer this year. They should be going back to the simple 9 day hunt with a free doe tag! The biggest thing the DNR has to open their ears and pay attention to the people with concerns this way we work together as a team to decide on what the best solution is. I also believe that we should have a say on what is going to happen next year, see what happens next then decide what to do the following year. This debate really gets my attention because something has to change and it has to change today! Respectfully KYLE

That would be one heck of a dog!!! I know walkers coon hunt if they are trained but adding Badgers, Pheasant and Rabbits and so on. I think the dog will get confuse on what hes hunting for. Example your out Pheasant hunting and the dog comes across a hot trail of a coon he going to go after that instead. So if you want a dog to do that I would suggest you get a couple of dogs walker for coons, begale for rabbits, pointer or lab for pheasant. Also it will be alot easier to start training them when they are pups. So I would say you could but I think thats alot for one dog.

Becarful with those combos! They slap on the cheapest stuff on there to make it look like you are getting a heck of a deal. My suggestion is go to a gun shop and buy from them. Not only they can answer more questions but they will be telling you the truth rather than a big box store who probably does not know nothing about guns. When you vist your local gun shop they will also be able to help you get set up correctly the first time. For example if you are having trouble seeing clearly through the scope they will know how to adjust it correctly or recomened the one that will best suite you. GOOD LUCK!!!

+ 1s for the above answers. I hunt in the northern part of the state and its the same thing. The deer kill was down because nobody was seeing anything. Almost every body I talked to do not want this 16 day gun season. I heard alot of land owners that have snowmobile trails run through their land and if the DNR goes along with this 16 day season the land owners are closing the trails down. I'm one of them. I bow hunt to and with all the seasons, youth hunt(which I think its a good idea), T-zone, then a 16 day hunt, muzzle loader season, and another T-zone season when does a bowhunter get a chance!!!

If you are talking about reloaction of black bears. In WI each time a bear gets trapped for crop dammage. The first time he gets a tag with a number. Then its haul off 150+ miles and let go. If he gets trapped again in the same area he was trapped the first time he gets tagged again and relocated. If he gets trapped the 3rd time in the same area he is done. This really upsetting with my group because the DNR does this mostly a week or 2 before our kill season. Just to let you know when a bear is trapped and released it will always find its why back. We havest a bear with 2 tags that was trapped twice, hauled 100+ miles each time, we killed it about 1 mile from where it was trapped! So long story short the state is wasting your money on how how they are saying they are trapping and relocating bears!!!!

Good answers above. To do quality deer managment it does take several years before you start notice the change. What I would do this year and the next few years is start culling the bucks. Culling I mean the bucks who's antlers are deformed, crooked like 3 points on one side and a single spike on the other. I know it will be hard to do but going to have to past up the basket rack bucks for a few years. Get the cull bucks genes out of area and the nice bucks to breed this should start turning around. This only works if everybody around you does the same thing. If you past up a fork, it jumps the fence and the next group kills him you are accomplishing anything but not filling your tag. Everybody has to work together, by telling what your group harvested. If you do not let the bucks a chance to grow then its not going to work. Remember this does take a few years to get started to where you will notice the difference. Good luck!

Is there anyway you can walk around it? Are you bowhunting or gun hunting? With the rut going on the deer sleeping patterns are kind of messed up right now. The bucks are going to be on the go most the time. if you are hunting with a gun this would be a good place to sit all day long. If the groups around you start driving deer and they come to your bedding area you best be there. Don't leave the stand till after dark. Plan ahead when you leave for the night. What I mean on that lets say you saw 15 deer heading west of your stand before dark try heading east to get out of there and come in in the morning the same way you went out the night before. But I would not walk through the heart of their bedding area. GOOD LUCK!!!

I recomend a .243 win. It it very accurate and does have more power than you realize. Since it will be the first gun your kid will hang on it for life. I hunt with a 7 mag now but from time to time I get the .243 out. Sure I grown out of it but after shooting it a few times I know where to postion the gun. With a .243 you will not be disapointed with it.

Depends on the area you are hunting, if you are hunting on opening land you must likely want to have a scope. After you get adjusted to it it will come naturaly to you when you bring the gun up. If you are hunting in the thick brush open sites or a very low power scope will work, better off with open sites. 30-30 is know for the "Brush gun" in northern WI. I hunt in northern WI I have a .243, .270, and 7mag with no iron sights, just have to used to your gun. I know this for a fact. My cousin used my .270 and missed a huge buck at a lousy 100 yards, the next day I took the same gun and shot a large 8 at 200 yards. I personaly beleive you have to be comfortable with your gun. Just spend time shooting the gun for every situation, fast draw to leaning against a tree.

I would a store that you can make your pics from a scanner, like when you options of the shade, color, border and so on. Myself I would get a nice picture blow it up to an 8x10, and put somewhere on the pic put the date of the kill, and thanks uncle ken or whatever his name is. For example: 10/22/2009 Thanks Uncle (name) without you this would not be possible!

I have to say A and B, I could be wrong here, but I believe that one of the reasons we are losing the next generation of hunters is that more and more kids are growing up in the cities whereas older generation grew up in the country. Back in the old days you went hunting to feed your family. Now most kids feeding the family means heading down to the meat market. When the kids don't have the daily exposore of the outdoors then they tend to be misformed on how beauitful the outdoors are and taught be the city folks that hunter are evil and so what. Instead of parents exposing the outdoor classes to kids then are signing them up for soccer or football and so on. Also attending a bigger city, the teachers are mostly non-hunters and I believe they could be telling our kids at a young age that its wrong and mean to hunt animals and you should feel bad if you do. I'm not saying this happening 100% of the time but I think its a contributing factor.

A good place to look is on a picked cornfield with close bedding by. I usally look when the snow is melting in early spring or late winter. If you see a field this winter full of deer take a walk were they feed. As far as dropping the antlers is all depends on the stress they had in rut and the winter weather.

from michaelpoage on 09.06.09

Depends on the area you have a shot at. If the head is behind a tree then vitals or can see head but not body. At close range ya, but you have a very little target. If you are shooting close if you hit the right spot on the vitals(bigger target) you should not lose very much meat. If you hit them in the front shoulder ya you will waste meat but more than likely will kill them where as if you aim for the head and miss then you have no meat. Kill or no meat. Depends on the situation running for sure vitals.

Early in the summer I tend to shoot more to build the strength and confidence up. I don't shoot alot at a time because your arm gets tired and your grouping gets bigger then you start wanting to move your sites. About a month before season I only shoot one arrow then come back about 10 minutes then shoot another one. The way I see it, 99 times out of a hundred you only going to have one crack at the deer. Like I tell younger hunters learn to make that first shot count. So I think if you are not going to be shooting in a tournament I think its a waste of time to keep shooting until your arm falls off. Its the first arrow you shoot thats going to count not the 5th ,20th 50th but the first one. Good luck

I made a home made target about 8 years ago and its still like new. What you will need: 2-2"x10"x36" board 2-1/2" x 36" threaded rod 4-washers 8-nuts to fit the threaded rod enough cardboard cut the the size of 2 1/2 feet long by 10 inches that when you stack then it would be 2 to 2 1/2 feet high. The first thing to do is drill a 1/2 inch hole in both of the 2x10s about 4 inches from the end.(make sure it is in the center of the board. Now take you rods and on one end put on a washer then two nuts of the rods. Slide the rods through one of the boards. Now lay the board down so the rods are sticking up in the air. Now take the cardboard you have cut down and lay them on the board between the rods. Take the other board and slip the rod above the cardboard. Now the cardboard should be between the boards. Take the washers and nuts and put them on just like you did on the bottom. Now just crank the top nuts evenly to compress the cardbord together. If you start make a hole from the arrows grouping simply loosen it up and shift the layers of the cardboard around. I did made a stand to put it on so however you want to do it its up to you. Now being having cardboard I advice you to putting inside when not using. Make sure you tighting it down evenly, Not once did a arrow made it through half way and pulls out pretty easy. If you built one let me know how it works for you. I am heading north this weekend and I will take some pics of it and post it when I get back.
In WI you have to have a special perment to hunt with a cross bow. So if you have no physical disabilities you can't hunt with a cross bow so you have to hunt with a compound. Whats the policy in other states?

I lost everything I typed Gosh darn it. Well start over again. I hunt bear in northern Wisconsin and we hunt both bait and dogs. Its up to the shooter how he/she wants to harvest one. We have a quite of few members in our group. Not sure if you realize WI does have a lottery for a class A lience(kill tag) you still buy a class B linence(help harvest one) Anyway we do both methods. Bait piles are great for both methods because bait piles are a great place to start the dogs at. I can't say one is better than the other but dogs are fun. When I get my tag I would love to shoot my first bear sitting in a corn field and wating for him to come up to me. Now that sounds like fun!!!

If I were you, I would have done the same thing. They are guest on your land and the should respect it, and if a few bad apples spoil for the rest of them, thats they way it goes. Should see if other land owners around you have the same problem that you are having. Mabe shutting down a large portions of the trail system so they will not have a place to ride. This might wake them and say we better shape-up or we won't have any place to ride. The snowmobile club that I am on in northern WI have signs around our area the read,"Respect it or lose it". I think its a good motto for trails that are open to the public. The thing is if the litters were on there own property they would be taking the trash back to the house with them.

Thats great you guys are picking up other peoples trash. Every year my bear hunting group gets together every spring and cover thousands and thousands and thousands acres of woods to pick up what ever people leave behind or drop because they do not to pay the dispose cost. We picked up beer bottles to frigeraters to washer and dryers. Its kind of a big thing in northern WI, other area bear hunting groups do the same thing. We always pick a day and all the groups clean up for one day. After we are done, we meet up and have a lunch and a few beers and BS a little. The local landfill donates the dumpsters and the dumping cost, we even have local game wardens help out. Local markets donate food and beverages. My advice is try to get some locals in your area to get together and clean up the local lake shore or park. Once you get the reputation out that you care about the enviroment too, the non-hunters and non-fishermen will probably think differently. Ask around I'm sure you can get enough hands to help out. The hardest part is getting the ball rolling but once you do its easy, and then you make an annual outing to clean up your local area.
I hunt with both stick stands and climber. In WI north woods you have a varitey of trees ranging from telephone poles to what ever you what to call them. It all depends on where you want to sent up. Got to take in consider the wind, angle, where the deer are coming from. One spot in a funnel I hunt at if the wind is coming from the north or west I have to use a stick stand because to many branches. I rather use a climber because it takes less time to set up. I actually feel safer in a climber. Also like I read on the other comments you have great mobability. If in the morning you have a place picked out but on the way out to the woods the wind changes directions you can adjust quickly.

I laughed when I read this, it was a few years ago I was fishing with my cousin, we been on the lake mabe 5 mintues and he gets a little bass on and then brings it up to the boat. He trying to unhook the bass then the bass flops around and gets the treble hook deep into my cousin thumb. I was able to get the bass off but not him. So here we are loading the boat back up with my cousin having a fishing lure hanging from his thumb!!! I took him into the ER(which was about 30 mile drive) and told the doctors what happen. Then I told the doc don't worry about the thumb just worry about the bait cause its mine!!

A couple of years ago I was fishing with my cousin, and my friend up in U.P of Michagan on the river at the mouth of Lake Michagan. We were camping at a camp ground right next to we were fishing. We caught our limit of walleyes about midnight, and pulled the 16 foot boat a shore (no docks) we pulled the hole boat up were only the motor was only in the water. There is a dam just up the river where we were fishing. Unknow to us they open the dam up a little bit. About 6 am we were waking up by some commotion that there was a boat down river with nobody in it! Next thing we heard was sirens getting louder and louder, turns out, it was our boat have drifted down river!!

Being a bear hunter up in Northern WI, I have seen my fair share of bear tracks. Six inches is pretty wide, a nice bear, but to consider the size(weight) of the bear depends on much the print sinks into the soil. If it is hard ground and still leaves a dent in the soil then it would be a dandy. We haverst on bear 2 years ago with a 5 1/2 inch pad that weighed only 225 lbs. It is really hard to guess the size of a bear just on the size of the track. We killed 350 pound bear that the track was not very wide but sunk into the ground pretty good. So you really can not go by the size of the track. Also if you see a bear, to determine if it is a nice bear, pay attention to the length but more imporantly the space between the belly of the bear and the ground. The less space there is the biggger the bear.

mabe set up some game cameras around that area. Keep notes what trails they are using, what time of day, wheather conditions. After awhile you should be able to figure out, example, like when its cloudy and in the afternoon they like using this trail. Watch from a distance to what location they are coming out to feed, again keep track of the time and weather. This does take some of your time but improves your chances to harvest the big one.

If you are trout fishing you wont be able to fight a muskie. Also if you are able to spot the muskie most likely he is not interested at feeding at the time. Lot of times when I'm crapppie fishing I have these huge 50+ inch muskies right around my boat then I throw the muskie baits out nothing!! When I do not see them before hand thats when I catch them! Thats the way it goes for me, if somebody can tell some pointers when I do see a muskie around my boat what can I do to make then strike???

I would have to agree with buckhunter. If you look in your local paper or internet you should be able to get a very good bow for alot less than you would pay for a new one in the store. Alot of times someone pays big bucks for a bow and accesseries for their first time bowhunting and find out they do not like it, so they sell it. Sure if you look around abit you can get the complete package for a quite a deal, plus you will have everything you need, sights, arrows, case I seen where they even had clothes and stand for a package that was a great deal. Buckhunter said it well its not the bow that makes the kill its the shooter. WELL SAID BUCKHUNTER!!! You could have a $1,000 bow but if you can't hit nothing its worth nothing. I'm gussesing its your first year bowhunting start off simple and if you enjoy it then upgrade if not you won't be out as much money. Good luck finding a bow.

Q:what is the best way to fish for crappies, i was thinking a jig with some nightcrawler on it
from buddyboy564 on 05.10.09

I always have best luck with an orange jig with a white twisty tail, I use a stick bobbers(not the real skinny ones but the ones that have a stick on top and bottom with a little bulge in the center) Have a brain fart cant remember what they are called. LOL rather than round ones. About foot or foot and half(depends on depth of water) between the bobber and jig. What I do is cast the line out then reel the slack up so you have a stright line from your pole to your bobber. Wait about 5 seconds then start reeling in really slowly, just enough to make the bobber dance real slow, this will allow the twisty tail make a little action. My experience when the crappies bite, the bobber usally does not go straight down but rather start drifting to the side. Then reel it up till you feel the fish then have fun. If you try this method, I hopes it works as good for you as it does for me. Can't wait to go fishing for the first time this year myself. Between college, work, and racing(pit crew) not a whole lot of extra time. Good luck

from buck hunter 17 on 05.12.09

It all depends on the hunting situations. I used climbers, stick stands, and a homemade enclosed tower. The tower of course is really not effiecent for bow hunting. The climber is nice because you have alot more mobilty and its quiter to set up. The down side of climbers you have to find a straight tree. If you have lots of branches on the tree you can use the stick stand and use the branches for concealment. The down side of stick stands is takes a quite awhile to set up if you have to cut some branches to make a shooting lane and get your stand up, while doing this you are bound to make noise. So my opionion is all has to do with the situations. The enclose I don't use very much unless its raining or very cold, thats the WI deer hunting season is like.

Sorry for your lost. I would have a hard time selling the mounts that my grandfather and father shot over the years. Each one has its own story that they told me and every time that I see the horns it takes me back to the story. My advice is too really think that if its something you really want to do? Cause once you sell them they are most likely go forever. I'm sure each one of your Dads mount has a story that he told you. When I have kids I would love to be able to show them the mounts and tell them the same stories. If you still want to sell them I agree with the rest of the guys. One thing you could do is check into (not sure if you live in a rural area or not) mabe check with the local tarverns and bars that your dad mabe hangout at. This way the mounts are still close to home and the locals can tell storys about that animal to others to help your dads spirtit for hunting stay alive. Agian sorry for your lost sounds liked a great hunter.
Like the others said late spring into fall. I have best luck when the water is like glass to get more of the sound and ripples affects.
