“It’s better to go broke at the range than it is to make a fortune in the shop.”*--Christopher Self, Alabama machinist, designer and rifle nut.
Last week, I got a further lesson on the folly of attempting shots at long range without actually testing your equipment beforehand. Shooting at 300 yards, a 165-grain polymer-tipped bullet which had shot splendidly at 100 and 200 yards turned in a group with a vertical spread of 7 inches. There was no horizontal dispersion at all, but the slugs were all over the place up- and down-wise.
Sounds to me like your breathing. When we are on the range and there is no left or right deviation then the coaches always tell us its our breathing. Thats just my two cents take it for what it worth.
I am glad I read the offical Rules, it really sucks that FL, NY, and RI residents can not enter. I am from NY and that just ruined my day. I guess I need to switch my residency to NC before the contest is over.
Something's fishy here... I'm not sure if it's a carp (look at those lips), decaying salmon, blow up toy or what? The video seems legit enough, but I doubt that tiny little girl could have picked up this fish purely based on its weight. Is this video...
That is a carp, I caught a salmon once that was about 3 feet long. I was doing a stream bottom survey in my advanced placement science class and in my wake the salmon was swimming. Though it was dying it still was a cool catch to be able to pick it up by the tail.
I know I said I'd be back at you with another caption contest on friday, but Deeter's out guiding so I promised him I'd cover his back. By now most of you should know the rules... Whomever writes the best caption to the image above (in our estimation) wins a prize. This week we're going to change it up a little bit and instead of winning gear, the winner will get...
So what’s Brett Favre going to do now that he’s “officially” retired? Have a look, on Wildgame Innovations’ website (scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the TV screen).
I agree vtbluegrass, I was raised in NY where we can not use bait for deer. Now I hunt in NC and people ask what bait I am using this year and I tell them nothing. If you can not take a deer without baiting it then what is the point? I am in it for the hunt, the tracking, scouting, I do not feel it is to hard to set up over a bait pile and wait but thats just me and the way I was raised.
My uncle's dog had puppies when I was 2. They were a mix but I did not know what that meant at the time. When my father brought her home he asked me what I wanted to name her. Me being 2 said "Puppy", my father agreed that she was a puppy but said again pick a name. So needless to say for her whole 14 years of life her name was puppy. People always laughed when they asked what her name was and how old. But I woundn't have it any other way.
If this were say a teenager who went out and beat his fawn, you know as well as I do they would be getting the book. They would say that he or she is a killer, must be video games. The law in this country like said be for should "be blind to all people." But in reality its not, the lady was scared for her life from something that weighs maybe 20 pounds. I mean come on, I am not saying make an example out of her but the law should apply.
This week a new North Carolina state law went into effect allowing active members of the military to hunt and fish without a license while home on leave. I admit, as a discussion topic this one is a little light on controversy; most of us, I think, would agree that the folks protecting our freedom should hunt and fish for free. But this is a perfectly good forum for us to show our support. So let’s hear it.
New York gives me a free big, small game and fishing license if I am on leave less than 30 days out of the year and stationed outside NY. Not a bad deal I ever pass up.
Yeah, I know. We haven't announced a winner for the last caption contest we ran a couple of weeks ago. There's just to many good captions. I tell you what... at the end of the week we'll announce both. This week and the previous contest winner. Whomever writes the best caption for this week's disgusted look on angler Roy Tanami being given water bottle full of scented soft-plastics will win a Simms G3 guide vest (large only). This vest is for the angler that brings everything. There are 22 pockets on this bad boy and it retails for $199.95.
In what scientists say might be the first case of its kind, a new report details the story of a 62-year-old man in New York state who died last year of meningoencephalitis, apparently after being bitten by a deer tick infected with deer tick virus.
I am surprised it was in NY, I am from NY and have never had a tick on me. But I am stationed in NC and can not even walk into my backyard next to the woods with out getting atleast two on me.

Reaction To Fawn Beating: “Deer Are Not People”65
(see Elderly Women Charged With Beating Fawn To Death coverage from our Field Notes Blog)
From Don Surber’s blog in West Virginia’s Daily Mail:
A little old lady killed a deer in her garden. Now people on the Internet are demanding that she be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Goodness...
