  • Petzal: How I Spent My Summer Vacation
    43

The photo you see here was taken in the deep and rolling hills of old Virginia, by Mr. Jerry Cox of Tazewell, VA, to whom I am indebted. The people standing behind me are also Virginians, except for the fellow on the left, whose name I did not get, but whom I know to be a pensioner from Tennessee. The rifle in the rest in front of me belongs to him. He insisted I use it, because my gun “…would be embarrassing to take to a dump and shoot rats.”

Mr Petzal...don't worry about the "short range shots"! Take 'em where you get 'em!

It is great to see people having fun groundhog hunting, not matter what they are shooting with! Though my rig is not quite as sophisticated as the one shown, I hunt groundhogs a lot and have fun doing it! Good shooting!

Hi 007, again I need to correct a statement I made about my bipod....the legs are telescoping aluminum with rubber feet. They connect, at the top, with some sort of rubber thing that gets hot and will let the rifle tip over if I do not keep my hand on it. Also, I failed to mention that I have tweaked my C.O.A.L. a bit, putting the ogive of my Sierra's closer to the rifling. I am looking forward to seeing some pictures from you and your son's competition! Good hunting!

Hi 007 and thanks. My bipod is a rubber legged polecat, and is terrible in the sun. My next purchase will be a swivel Harris. In addition to the Savage, I use a BSA 6-24, illuminated reticle, mil-dot scope. I load Sierra 1455s (acetyl resin tipped, 55grain boat-tails) on top of IMR - 4895. I do not have a "chrony", but listed and calculated velocity for my load is 3320 fps. I use Winchester brass, and CCI primers exclusively for the load I have worked up for my Savage.

I am very lucky. I hunt 3 different farms and seldom see anyone around. I was surprised to see that you use .223 for turkey, but then I realized that you are in West Virginia, and are allowed a lot more leeway with rifles! I have never turkey hunted, but I believe we are restricted- here- to shotgun or bow. For groundhogs, I use Sierra's 55 gr blitzking. It is an acetyl resin tipped, boat tail, and works very well for me. Good hunting to you too! Keep me posted on how you do with your handgun and muzzleloader. I saw your great group of squirrel taken with your TC! Must be fun!

Hi 007 I do reload for my .223. The price of new ammo is getting ridiculous, and I think I get much better accuracy with my customized, worked up loads.

That thing is so big I think it would qualify as "BIG GAME"! Were it me, in your place, I would have emptied the magazine, thrown the empty pistol at it, and then I would have had to go empty my shorts! I am glad we do not have those things in this part of Ohio!
