Some of the shelters in this article are great and will work well in a lot of different situations but a lot will take a good amount of time to construct if you want them done right. That means waterproof and big enough for you and your gear. Like Nelson said you have to have a good Personal Survival Kit (PSK) with you when you are out. That extra five or ten pounds will mean the world to you when you absolutely need it, trust me I've been there and done that.
Some of the info here is fantastic but the Fire plow is not a realistic method for us in North America. It is extremely difficult and more suited for tropical climates. The hand drill and bow drill are my favorite two and you can use a variety of materials whether you line back East, in the Southwest or in the great Northwest like I do.
I was out in the field two months ago and a younger guy set out a trotline in a pretty well running creek. He used 10 pound test line and ran the line about 20 feet across the creek with small hooks and just used worms as bait. He set out six hooks on the line and the next day he had one fish on the line. This took no extra effort other than setting it up so he was able to do other items. A great showing for the others in his group. Hoo-yaa!
When you're cold and lost in the wilderness, being able to make fire may determine if you live or die. Do you have matches? A cigarette lighter? A steel for showering sparks? Good. Now all you need is lee from the wind and tinder. (Technically speaking, tinder is defined as material that will glow from a spark; if the material requires a match to catch flame, it's fine kindling. But with your blood congealing you're not going to be overly concerned about definitions.) Look around. Chances are very good that one of the following natural tinders is within sight to save your life.
Nice article, that resonates with global tinders. In other words, you can find these tinders all over the world from Asia to Europe to North America. Besides these experiment with what is out there, where you are and add to your list.
