Okay, folks. The response to the last Man’s Best Friend caption contest was spectacular, and many of you expressed desire for another chance to win big. So here it comes.
We’ve got a pretty great image of, ummm, an atypical gun dog, and we need your editorial touch.
Okay folks, here is the next buck you need to score (click here if you missed the first one). Let’s review. You are playing for a Mathews Z7, the company’s brand new, flagship compound bow for 2010. It’s a prize worth about $900.
In fishing there are rules that apply to all species in all bodies of water. Know what's behind you before you cast. Never reel against the drag. Keep constant pressure on the fish. We seem to have no problem following most of these fishing commandments, but there are also many that slip through the cracks more often than not. They are the rules that should absolutely become habit, yet they are overlooked in the heat of the moment. Here are the three no-brainer rules that I disobey most.
The DX4 in this clip is a prototype made by Australian-based Metal Storm, which is an appropriate name for a company that makes a gun with a rate of fire up to a million rounds a minute. The gun itself is nicknamed “The Vaporizer.”
The DX4 not only shoots caseless cartridges, those cartridges come in a “stick” of several rounds stacked end to end. The whole stick -- in this demonstration there are five rounds in each of the 36 barrels -- slides into the barrel at once.
Greetings Gun Nuts. Though I never thought an occasion would arise that caused me to stray from my post at the Honest Angler blog and enter the realm of Mr. Petzal and Mr. Bourjaily, sometimes strange things happen. One actually happened today. I aimlessly wandered the SHOT Show floor with Phil Bourjaily, filming whenever something grabbed his attention. Here's a look at what we found, including some of the hottest new guns and gear, plus a booth babe that signs lingerie. I hope you enjoy the show, as Phil and I certainly had fun making it -- Joe Cermele
I returned from SHOT relieved to find my old setter, Ike, still alive and even able to rouse himself to wag his tail and give me a nuzzle when I came in the door. For a while after he first went blind, I took him to the field with me and let him run around before and after the hunt as he’s doing in the picture above. But he has been fading since mid-December. He can walk a little but mostly I carry him from place to place.
Seen this horse yet? It’s the latest mystery monster making the rounds (or maybe its second or third round) in cyberspace. Depending on which source you reference, the buck pictured was killed in Maine or maybe in Ontario and weighs 400, no 414, no 440 pounds. The resounding question is: “Is this photo for real?” After a little poking around and a couple of dead ends, I wound up on the phone with Shorty Flees of Wisconsin’s Wilderness Whitetails Game Farm and Preserve.
The Z7 is Mathews’ brand new flagship model for 2010. The company touts it as their best-ever blend of speed and forgiveness, featuring an IBO speed of 332 fps, a 30-inch axle-to-axle length, a 7-inch brace height, and a retail price of $899. And it can be yours. All you have to do is score some bucks.
So here’s what I’m wondering about this morning: When it comes to nylon monofilament fishing lines, who is using what? There’s a huge array of brands and styles out there, so I’m curious to know what your response--and that of others--might be.
Fair is fair, so here’s what I use. Most often, it’s Berkley Big Game mono in various sizes because it’s fairly consistent, predictable, and--most of all--cheap. A 10-pound-test spool containing 1,500 yards sells for about $8 at my area Wal-Mart. Sometimes I want a little extra edge and spool up with Trilene Sensation, which is more expensive but a bit smaller in diameter.
