Bore sighting does only one thing, to get you close to being on paper at 30 yards. In all my years of shooting, there has been only two rifles that were dead on at 100 yards and I stood a better chance of getting hit by lightning on those clear days and should have won the lottery. Stop dinking around and wasting ammo, zero it in at 30 yards then at 100 you want it at 3 inches high and final zero at 175 yards. Remember, bore sighting is only good as the size of paper you’re shooting at 30 yards!

If you’re going to shoot a Magnum Cartridge, shoot a Magnum Caliber and leave the 30 cal Mags at home. If you’re going to get kicked like a mule, then shoot a bullet that gives better performance down range!

You restricted to what I call gas gun loads. Hornady make a load called the "LIGHT MAGNUM". You cannot shoot this load in your gas gun because it produces excessively high pressures at the gas port damaging the rifle and possibly injuring the shooter. Get you a good bolt gun, you will be glad you did! If you want a gas gun, get you a M1 Garand!!
One cannot say what is the best for your gun. Take WA Mtnhunter doesn't like Hornady, but I've won a many High Power Matches with that brand while Sierra loads don't come close starting at the 300 to 600 and especially on the 1000 yard line. What shoots best in my rifle may not work as well in yours as the other way around is true also! Type and grade of barrel, Barrel twist, barrel whip and muzzle crowning to name a few all have a major impact on the performance of your load. Crowning alone makes a difference on the accuracy of spitzer and boat tail bullets.

http://www.wikihow.com/Field-Dress-a-Rabbit How to Field Dress a Rabbit Field dressing, also known as gutting, is the process of removing the skin and internal organs in order to best preserve the meat for eating. With rabbit, this is particularly important as they can carry the disease Tularemia, which is listed by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) as a possible bioterrorism agent. So, for all you Elmer Fudd's out there, this wikiHow will show you how to correctly field dress your dead rabbit. Deer Field Dress Find great deals and save! The same is not true of meat from animals you kill. On the contrary they can and often do carry diseases and parasites. Getting a clean shot with a BB Gun is the most important step in any field dressing. With a messy kill internal organs can mix together, hair and parasites can enter the carcass and, depending on your weapon, you may not have much rabbit left to eat. Understand the dangers of gutting a rabbit incorrectly. Blood born diseases and parasites, along with spoiled food are some of the dangers of not field dressing or gutting correctly. Some of these dangers include: Warbles a type of common parasite found in most wild animals. Warbles live under the skin, but outside of the 'meat' and are planted by Bot flies. They can infect humans, cattle, sheep and squirrels. Warbles on game are not harmful to humans. The only way to contract this parasite is with contact with an adult bot fly. Rabbits (etc) with warbles are completely edible and should not be discarded. Tularemia or Rabbit fever is a decreasing but serious disease carried through the blood and the air that attacks the internal organs. Humans are often infected by a tick bite or through handling an infected animal. Ingesting infected water, soil, or food can also cause infection. Tularemia can be acquired by inhalation; hunters are at a higher risk for this disease because of the potential of inhaling the bacteria during the skinning process. Always carefully inspect the liver of your rabbit for white, yellow or any other spotting which can indicate Tularemia. If you even suspect you see spots, discard the carcass right away. Field dress your rabbit Always field dress your rabbit immediately to greatly reduce your risks. Keep everything clean. Do not use dirty water. Keep the carcass away from mud, dirt, twigs, leaves or other contaminants Use a clean stick to hold the carcass open. Use a clean knife. Wear thick latex or thick rubber gloves. Remove the head and feet of your rabbit, cutting at the ankles. Holding the back skin of the rabbit with your fingers make a cut through the skin and over the back, but not into the meat. Peel back the skin of the rabbit, or hide, in both directions with your fingers. Take care to not let the fur or hide touch the carcass. Remove the complete skin of the animal, including the tail. Remove the complete entrails of the rabbit using one of these methods: Remove the entrails by hand. Cut open the abdomen, reach inside and remove all internal organs. Remove the entrails by squeezing. Apply pressure from the bottom of the rib cage while moving your hand down to the rabbit's anus. Repeat this process until you can feel the entrails loosen. Be careful not to burst the bowel or intestine. Doing so will spoil your meat. Spread your legs, and hold the rabbit by the front legs. With the rabbit facing you, flip the rabbit down with moderate pressure. Don't flip the carcass around too hard, or you might be wearing a hat of rabbit entrails. The entrails will exit the rabbit through his anus. Let the body hang and cool down for a little while. You can also wash it. The carcass should be maintained at a temperature not exceeding 4 degrees Celsius (39 degrees Fahrenheit) Cover the carcass and hide in salt. Prepare the meat for consumption Understand that processed and packaged meat goes through extensive testing to make sure it is safe for public consumption. Wild game that you have killed obviously does not go through such a process and therefore special precautions are called for: Always wash your hands before preparing food and keep raw meat away from other food. Thaw your meat in the refrigerator or microwave, not on the kitchen counter. Use a meat thermometer to check that it is cooked all the way through. Clean the thermometer after each use. Cook any meat you kill to well done. The department of health suggests indicates a temperature of 82 degrees Celsius (180 degrees Fahrenheit); or higher and the use of a meat thermometer. [edit] TipsCold weather may reduce the number of parasites, but will not get rid of them completely. The best time to hunt rabbits is early in the morning and just before sunset, when they are most active. In some municipalities it is illegal to leave entrails in nature, check your local laws to know for sure. Some people dip the rabbit in water to reduce the risk of fur contacting the meat. Some people dip the rabbit in boiling water to help remove any parasites in the fur or hide. [edit] WarningsDo not allow your dog to eat the entrails -- they could poison your dog. Tularemia is one of the most infective bacteria known; fewer than ten organisms can cause disease leading to severe illness in humans. The course of disease involves spread of the organism to multiple organ systems, including the lungs, liver, spleen, and lymphatic system. The course of disease is similar regardless of the route of exposure. Mortality in untreated (pre-antibiotic-era) patients has been as high as 50% in the pneumoniac and typhoidal forms of the disease, and even with antibiotics the fatality rate is as high as 2%. The exact cause of death is unclear, but it is thought to be a combination of multiple organ system failures. In a potential aerosol form the disease is considered a possible bioterrorist agent. Persons who inhale an infectious aerosol would likely experience severe respiratory illness departments. It is illegal to hunt rabbit out of season. Check your local laws to make sure you only hunt in season.

America, Canada , all Europe .....need a President like this Prime Minister John Howard Australia:Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote: 'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians'. 'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom'. 'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society . Learn the language!' 'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.' 'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.' 'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.' 'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.' Maybe if we circulate this amongst ourselves, American citizens will find the backbone to start speaking and voicing the same truths.

Depends which solvent, rust preventative/ oil and how you cleaned your barrel. For High Power Rifle Competition I like to coat the barrel with Break Free which reduces copper fouling when your shooting 50 to 300 rounds daily. The problem with Break Free, is the first round will be high and when you get to the 3rd round, it has settled down to zero. Barrel bedding and heating of the barrel may make a big difference. So the only way to be sure is to go out and try it!

During my years in Search and Rescue, its has been my experience in all the drownings, the parents were at hand but it only takes a fraction of an inch out of reach and a blink of an eye for disaster to happen! This is what I did for my 8 year old Grandson Alex two seasons ago. 25-06 Remington 700 in an aftermarket Ramline youth stock and if works fantastic, Alex is very light weight but exceptionally strong for a fly weight. He loves the 25-06 and season before last shot a nice doe and last season at age 9 see my photos of him taken a nice little buck at 250 yards and doe moments later at 150 yards, both with one shot. As the young man gets older, he can switch to the adult stock. For us extreme shooters pushing the 700 yard mark for Coyotes and deer, the 25-06 is the best cartridge from Varmint hunting to Caribou and is the smallest recommended for Elk so the young man can surly keep hunting. The 243 which is a necked down 308 Winchester to 243-08 is a very nice cartridge. However it doesn’t have the range, range of bullet weights and wind bucking ability of the 25-06 has. The 25-06 is a 30-06 necked down to 25 cal and if you reload you can make your cases out of 30-06 Military Match Brass

Let’s see, the guys a pyromaniac and we are working with explosives or a Child Molester working in a Child Care Center. Where do you draw the line? One of my best friends was born and raised in Iraq and was a Master Sergeant in the US Air Force. As for the 1st Amendment, the Founding Fathers had no clue this would happen in a trillion years! While delivering an 18 wheeler load of booze to a Washington DC distribution center, I had the Biggest Black Man I have ever seen walk up to me and ask, are you Prejudice?! I took a step closer looked straight into his eyes and said Let me tell you what prejudice is Sir! 1: Prejudice is, to look left and right and left again before you cross a street. For you don’t have a clue why, this is to prevent you from getting your butt ran over causing serious or fatal injury!! 2: Prejudice is, you don’t reach into boiling cooking oil to get a handful of Freedom Fries! If you don’t have a clue, be my guest to try it! 3: Prejudice is, you don’t put your tongue on a flagpole at minus 47 degrees below zero. If you can’t figure this one out, you're really stupid! 4: What Prejudice is, knowing the difference between right and wrong and cause and effect of what the circumstances’ will be or may not happen! 5th and last, I don’t like ignorant people, let me ask you a question Sir, are you IGNORANT! No he replied. Praise God! My name is Clay and both of us became instant friends! The next thing I knew I was invited everyone to stay and have BBQ steak, chicken Prejudice is, fried corn and all the beer I could drink! O’MAN, I had to swoop to pick up the next load and I was already running late. I ask To Whom It May Concern, “Are you my friend in peace and willing to fight for it and to defend or are you my enemy? Is it about, nationality, place of birth, allegiance, body politic, citizenship, community, country, ethnic group, nation, native land, origin, political home, race, society? YOU BET! And to answer that? Perhaps this says it best! America, Canada , all Europe .....need a President like this Prime Minister John Howard Australia: Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.

Deferent areas require deferent strategies. Take Fort Chaffee for example, your busted over 80% of the time because deer actually look into look high into the trees, so ground blinds work best most of the time. Heavy ground cover requires you to get high above it while if I can use the blinds I go for it!

I have 2 pop up blinds and a couple deer stands. I would use the blinds in your case. However, what sounds to me, the owners of the Apple Trees and Corn Field have a problem of deer eating all what they have or may have. Get permission from the person who owns/lives at the house and perhaps you can open a back window and shoot out of it from there? As far as ethics are concerned I don't see a problem in the service your providing and it's not like your road hunting or spot lighting.

As you release the string, internal forces reacting and moving parts cause the bow to deviate off of target. The stabilizer does just that, stabilizes! To put it into perspective take the cheetah for example, it has a long tail to stabilize its body at high speeds over rough terrain and just imagine driving a vehicle at that speed over the same ground! The next time your not behind the wheel hold your arms stiffly straight out, as the vehicle goes over something rough bump or rail road track, you will notice you bounce less

30-06 WORKS FANTASTIC AS THE ONE GUN! 130 grain Hornady's for Coyotes to the most Monstrous Mule Deer and for Elk a 180 will do a fantastic job! The best BANG FLOP on Bull Winkle Moose and it was a big one was a Teenager with a 30-06 at 100 yards shooting over the counter Remington 180 grain Core-Lokt®!
O”Here we go again! A 55 grain soft nose bullet in the lungs will work fantastic and I’ve shot more deer with my 22-250 than all my rifles put together. I get just as much of a blood trail and bang flop with 223 and 22-250 as with a 30-06. When the lungs are turned to mush they are not going any further than if you hit them with a 50 BMG! From Clays archives of bookmarks, places, information and things to read, ken.mcloud said it best! “So, I think that the superior killing power of larger rounds is largely in our heads.(likely testosterone induced) A flat-shooting round that you can accurately place will produce as many if not more "bang-flop" kills as a heavy caliber round.”

I strongly recommend staying away from the pumps and semis. The reason being is, with a bolt gun especially the Remington 700’s and Ruger M77’s, you can shoot any load thru it especially the Hornady 30-06 INTERBOND LIGHT MAGNUMS. If you handload, you can really tweak your bolt gun loads where as the pumps and gas you cannot! I sold my 300 Win Mag back in 1980 and replaced it with a 25-06 and never regretted it. I rather use my 30-06 rather than a 7mm Mag or a 300 Mag and if I do find any Rhinos or Water Buffs here in the US, I do have my 338 Win Mag!

The R25 in 308 will do you a fine job but yo have to remember, you cannot shoot loads like the Hornady Light Magnum. The real question is, do you really knead that hot of a round. The closer the wind disturbance the more effect it will have on the bullet. Look at the trees and grass and get some idea. Depending on the distance, wind and what cartridge and loading your using, a slight drift may not affect you hitting "MOP". Figure this one out! I was on the 1000 yard line at the Whittington Center in New Mexico at the NRA High Power Regional with the US Air Force Team shooting my M1A. All the way down the flags were at every direction and pointing almost straight up do the high wind. I figured 8 clicks into the wind and squeezed off the first sighter and it was a clean miss, DO WHAT! So I immediately check the sights for being loose or damaged and fired the second sighter, same place! Then I went to a no wind 32 clicks up, DEAD CENTER “X” RING!!!! By the time the bullet reached the target, the different wind directions blew the bullet back on target. Load I was using was M118 7.62NATO Special Ball which is nothing more than a 308 round 172 grain full metal jacketed match load. Bottom line, the wind can really fool you!

Wind does funny things, so the answer is yes. Out at Fort Chaffee, the deer have learned to look up into the trees!
Whitetail if not spooked a short whistle will do. Mule Deer if not spooked, hold your shot and stay quiet, quickly get into position and pick out the spot you think they are going over the ridge. Just before they go over the hill they will stop and turn broadsided to you to look back. BE READY! When I was growing up I cut my teeth on shooting 30-06 03-A3 while everyone else was plinking with 22’s. I busted a many Jack Rabbits and coyotes on a full run at 500+ yards including deer. Favorite pet load for my 30-06, 130 grain Hornady with 54 grains of IMR4064. By the way, Dad was the supply go getter for the Base Rod and Gun Club and ammunition and reloading components was darn near as cheap as shooting 22 Long Rifle!

These are a must have, Hornady and Lyman you have to pay for these two, but like I said, they are a must have! Winchester, IMR and Hodgens you can either obtain from there web site or access the data online from there web site. Of all the reloading manuals, I find Hornady the most accurate to print and verified across my chronograph. Others tend to be watered down and limited for bias to components to use.

Flip a coin! I've witnessed more sure Moose kills with 30-06 than the big 300 mags. In my book 270 is flatter shooting and is comparable to the 7mm Rem Mag and works fantastic on Caribou with 130 grain Hornadys. For anything up to Caribou, the 270 would be a good choice, but I would favor the 30-06 and later buy a 25-06. 25-06 is like crossing a 22-250 with a 270, YA”BUDDY!

I do know firsthand what the 30 cal vs 35 will do on Moose and I’d pick the 35 cal over the 30 cal.. The 35 has a much larger wound channel, bust heavier bone and penetrate more than the 30 cal. Bullets have what you can call a performance range and the major problem with the 300 Win Mag is at close range less than 175 yards, it drives the bullet above the optimum range expanding to soon and or blowing up. I’ve witnessed cleaner kills on moose with the 30-06 with the same bullet in a 300 Win Mag. GO FIQURE!

Here’s the scoop from the Coop for reloading. You are asking for serious trouble trying to seat the bullet as close to the lands as possible. If this is suppose to give you better accuracy, then why does Weatherby and my 03-A3 have a longer throat than any other rifle and shoot less than MOA dime size groups. I seat the bullet to recommended specifications as the reloading book says, sometimes a little deeper. As for trimming the cases to length, I take a shade more off to compensate for case flow. Bottom line, Stay within the specifications for the reloading data. All you need to blow your head off is for the seating die to come lose or have someone else try one of your loads. I have seen this to many times and had to use a large rubber mallet, mostly my boot to open the bolt, so go figure. NOT WORTH IT! I have always stayed within tolerance of OAL (Over All Length) and to this date I never lost a Match because I didn’t try to seat the bullet out just short of the lands. Show me a Shooter who practice this technique and I’ll show you a shooter whose scores are not better than yours! This reminds me of listening to people saying you need to get a credit card and buy at 27% interest to build your credit. Funny thing, they have less money than you have and for some of them are in the process of filing bankruptcy! One more thing, if you decide to proceed with this technique, I need your name and Social Security Number, Date of Birth and address so I can take a Insurance Policy out on you when not if you blow your or someone else’s head off. Also I need to know the next of kin to notify them when you do, SERIOUSLY!

That’s an easy one! You stuff the critter in an old suit case or travel bag. Drive down town where all the gang bangers hang out and place it in the middle of the road and setback with a camcorder and patiently wait with camcorder rolling for someone to stop to pick it up! O’so much fun!!!!

I carry a small jar of Vaseline® Petroleum Jelly which is a mixture of mineral oils, paraffin and microcrystalline waxes. As some of you know Vaseline® has more uses that WD40. After cleaning the wound, use a small amount to coat the wound then cover the area. This keeps out and lets out the bad stuff also to keep the wound moist. Vaseline® and magnesium stick is my primary fire starter rather than water proof matches. A 2x2 cotton patch saturated will burn 6 to 10 minutes.

What does your reloading book say Sir! I wish I had a nickle I had to use my boot to open anothers bolt because they deviated from the seating depth and there primers were blown and base of the case split. They were told the closer you seat a bullet to the lands, the more accuracy you have. BS! You know how much pressure that must have been, WOW! And that bomb almost went off next to me!!!My 03-A3 30-06 you can almost seat a 180 grain all the way out and it drives tacks with 100 grain 1/2 jacket Hornady and Speer bullets and what about the Weatherby Magnum line with all that free bore, no accuracy problem here or hearing anyone seating the bullets out for additional accuracy. The closer you seat the bullet to the rifling, the more chamber pressure you will have. If the bullet is touching the rifling, it doesn't get the movement kneaded to safely engage the rifling. Pushing the bullet into the rifling can and will blow the gun up! Is it worth it I ask! Are you gaining anything by deviating from the reloading data? I never lost a Match or Game because of not deviating from the recommended "OAL" seating depth! I've tried this practice before, ran it across the Chronograph and I found I didn't achieve better performance. I have found better ways to achieve better accuracy. In fact all I did is increased chamber pressure. Lowering the case just as the bullet barely starts seating into the case, rotating it about 90 to 180ish turn and seat to recommended "OAL" and weighing each and every charge sure does make a difference. What happens if your in a remote hunt and you open the bolt and the bullet remains stuck in your rifling/barrel? YOUR SCREWED!

Mr. Kenton Sir, this is the reason why I cherish Archery season more and more. It’s surely not the use of the bow, but to get away of the ignorance of it all. No matter where you turn, there is somebody telling your going to hell for using the equipment you have. So let me ask you a very simple question Sir, a straight up or down yes or no is all it takes. Fact, the Hunter population Nationwide is dwindling every year and because of it there is lesser number of Sportsmen and there are those who are trying there damnedest to shut hunting down altogether. If allowing inline Muzzle Loaders and Crossbows during archery season would reverse the dwindling numbers of sportsmen in the field and to bring additional tax revenue for the Pittman-Robertson 'tax'etc. This becomes a “WIN” WIN” for not just Sportsmen, but all who go outdoors to cherish it. So here is the question Sir, a straight up or down yes or no is all it takes. If the use of inline muzzles loaders and crossbows will increase the number of Sportsmen’s and by doing so increasing the amount of support for the Pittman-Robertson 'tax ‘and bring additional revenue to the State and local economy, Would you support it? YES or NO?

I've shot more deer all bang flops with my 22-250 out to 750 yards than all my rifle combined. It's all about hitting "MOP"! Once again ken.mcloud said it best! “So, I think that the superior killing power of larger rounds is largely in our heads.(likely testosterone induced) A flat-shooting round that you can accurately place will produce as many if not more "bang-flop" kills as a heavy caliber round.”
I’ve hunted in climates ranging from 120 to 72ish degrees below zero and I’ve been sunburned to almost frostbite and I can tell you if you’re looking for something that really works and I mean really works even after being stored wet for a long long time! Well by’ golly get’ya a small jar of good old fashion Vaseline from and a magnesium fire starter stick from your local Wal-Mart. So simple of an operation a GEICO Caveman can do it. Take a 2x2 inch piece of cloth or piece of t-shirt etc and saturate it with Vaseline and scrape a little magnesium on it and hit it with the flint side and now you have instant fire 6 to 10 minutes of flame, now compare that with any other lighter and remember you haven’t really used your fire starting resources at all. I still got the same Vaseline jar in my back pack some 10 years ago and still work as good as the day I put it in. In subzero degree weather butane lighters will fail and anything else like matches are more like a flash in the pan and they do deteriorate with age!

spencerkusa Barnes bullets works fantastic when the game is quartering away. The shots I make are at extreme ranges and the accuracy of the Barnes is phenomenal with the exception they have lost velocity to open up as where my Hornady works fantastic. Without know what you are cartridge and bullet your shooting, I can't give you a answer. Anything less than 2600fps off hand I would say sight in at 175 yards and anything over 2600fps 200 yards. As far as how high at 100 yards, I’ve found it best to sight in at the range of dead on zero at 175 or 200. I also discovered with today’s bullets shooting flatter trajectories you just might squeak it out to 225 yards and perhaps maybe 250 on the barrel burning, shoulder thumping, and sinus clearing Loudenboomers!

The Democratic Party is picking a fight with a Nation like no other. America will not go down with just a whimper like Australia did. There are those will die to protect this right so the question is to the Democrats, “IS IT WORTH IT!” As for the people supporting there 2nd Amendment, I support their cause, I just hope there the ones with the cool heads! “The broad principle that there is an individual right to bear arms is shared by many Americans, including myself. If I was to suggest one cartridge, it really depends on what your future plans holds for you? If Mule Deer is the largest then the 25-06 will do fine and it has plenty of steam to take Elk. For Moose a 30-06 will do a fantastic job and a Hornady 130 grain is my #1 choice for Mule Deer, less kick and flatter shooting with plenty of "BANG FLOP" knock down power even at 700 yards! Far as comparing the 257 Weatherby with the 25-06, I really don’t think you’ll notice the difference in 150 fps, but you will see it in your wallet! LMAO! I prefer the 25-06 over the 257 Weatherby, Weatherby is too damn proud of their brass! What you can do with a 257 Weatherby I can do just as well with my 25-06 and have change leftover for gas and another trip to the candy store for more reloading supplies! PS if you reload, you can really close the gap on the 257 Weatherby!!

jacmohr, I’m not going to lie or blow smoke so this is the best thing to do. If deer is the largest he plans to shoot, the 25-06 is by far the best choice period. It has the knockdown power even for Elk, it doesn’t kick and it has the long range needed for out west. Magnum performance without the kick including in the wallet too! Alex age 9 shot a buck at 250 yards and moments later a doe at 150 yards last season, see if a kid yet alone a adult with a 30-30 can do that!

In addition to the above in my pack I carry a small bottle of Vaseline and it has more uses than anything else you can carry. Being a former Search and Rescue member, keeping your wound clean, moist and covered is what you want. Once you get out you can get the additional care you need. One of the best uses for Vaseline and a magnesium fire starter stick is the best way for starting a fire under the most extreme conditions, been dar and dun dat!” Take a 2x2 inch piece of cloth that can also be used as a bandage and saturate it with Vaseline and scrape a little “magnesium on it and hit it with the flint side and now you have instant fire 6 to 10 minutes of flame. I still got the same Vaseline jar in my back pack some 10 years ago and still work as good as the day I put it in.

This is crazy! First make sure your rifle is unloaded! Place your scoped rifle on a rest and pick out something about 100 yards or more away and aim at it. Now without moving/disturbing the rifle move your head up and down, side to side and all around and see if the crosshairs move off that point of aim and If so, it’s the scope. If that checks out good, you need to remove the rings and inspect and retighten the tightness of the bases reinstall the rings and retighten them. Also look at the scope and rings for movement. Shooting either left or right handed will not change the sighting!

Excellent Sir Beekeeper and I couldn’t agree with you any more! Like I said a many of times, I’ve shot more deer with my 22-250 with a Hornady 55 grain Soft Point W/C than all my rifles combined and sold my 300 Mag back in 80 and replaced it with a 25-06 and never regretted it. Also while in Alaska for a solid 4 years spending more time combination of running the most used/populated shooting in Alaska and out in the field than at home and work, the 30-06 has more bang flops than the 300 Mags using over the counter Remington 180 grain Core-Lokt®. A 270 with a Hornady 130 grain knocks the biggest Caribou’s *ick in the dirt just as good as my 338 Win Mag! Instead of worrying about shooting “MOA”, we should be confident and hitting “MOP” and that what puts the blackstrap steaks on the Breakfast table! And yes Hell must have frozen over or something for me buying a Savage product. Just because my new Savage muzzle loader thumps a 45 cal 250 grain at 2800 fps isn’t the reason I bought it. It’s the no fuss no muss of the care of it. I like to shoot, not spending all my time cleaning the darn thing every 5th or so shot! From Clays archives of bookmarks, places, information and things to read ken.mcloud said it best! “So, I think that the superior killing power of larger rounds is largely in our heads.(likely testosterone induced) A flat-shooting round that you can accurately place will produce as many if not more "bang-flop" kills as a heavy caliber round.”

burnettjv, I’ve witnessed the use of both 7mm Rem Mag and 30-06 on many Bull Moose and the 30-06 definably has the edge on the 7mm Rem Mag! One of the biggest problems is with the 7mm/.284 diameter bullets, you don’t get the wound channel of a 30 cal and the 175’s are notorious for tumbling upon impact having less penetration. I’ve recovered several 7mm’s that looked like bananas.

Not legal in any State I know of. If you reload you can pull the bullets, remove the decaping pin from your resizing die, empty the powder one case at a time, neck size only then pour the powder back in and when you’re done pulling bullets, neck sizing and pouring the powder back then you can seat the same weight hunting or match bullet back. We did this to military ball and reseated match bullets, this is called Mexican Match and there is a true story behind this.

Yes WD-40 is great for guns! Others are full of it when they say it’s worse than water, they don't have a clue what they’re talking about! WD-40 stands for Water Displacement and it’s the 40th Formula! It’s fantastic for putting a light corrosion preventative coat on metal and a light coat in the bore. Using it as anticorrosion for the bore doesn’t affect the accuracy on the first shot as oils like Break-Free®. However after stripping the bore of a copper, Break-Free® is my #1 choice to reimpregnate the metal to greatly reduce copper fouling. Just remember to shoot 3 rounds before shooting for accuracy and use WD-40 to clean the bore after the 3 shots.

Good question, the Hunter should be with the tracker. Most State Laws require you to tag the Game before movement. As for the deer being alive? Use your better judgment. I would go ahead and put it out of its misery and leaving proof of prewounded condition.
Del in KS and country road are dead on, if your thing of hunting Elk the 30-06 is be my #1 recommendation. I've witnessed more band flops on Moose with the 30-06 with over the counter 180 grain so special soft points and over the big magnums. But if Elk isn't on the list, the 25-06 is the best cartrideg hands down for cartridge availability (Wal-Mart etc), performance you can't tell teh difeferance between the 25-06 and Weatherby except the wallet and price of ammo doesn't break the bank. As I said before, I sold/dumped my 300 Win Mag back in 80 and replaced it with a 25-06 and neer regreted it. The only reason I have a 338 Win Mag is because I went to Alaska and found myself backing up other Hunters

I take a plastic cup full of gas and sit it on top of the wood then light the top. As the fuel burns the side fuel will dribble down the side at the right amount and light the wood. It’s the safest way to start a fire with gas etc. Looking for something that really works and I mean really works even after being stored wet for a long long time! Well by’golly get’ya a small jar of good old fashion Vaseline from and a magnesium fire starter stick from your local Wal-Mart. So simple of an operation A caveman can do it. Take a 2x2 inch piece of cloth and saturate it with Vaseline and scrape a little magnesium on it and hit it with the flint side and now you have instant fire 6 to 10 minutes of flame, now compare that with any other lighter and remember you haven’t really used your fire starting resources at all. I still got the same Vaseline jar in my back pack some 10 years ago and still work as good as the day I put it in.

45 to 44 magnums? O’BROTHER! Several things you must weigh in, you’re shooting ability and the firearm to be used. Remember, bullets will pass thru sheetrock almost like paper and you are responsible at the time of trigger pull to the rest and complete stopping of the bullets you shoot even if someone steps on a rested bullet slips and falls!!! A MOSSBERG 500 YOUTH PUMP SHOTGUN 20 GAUGE WITH or any pump with #3 or #4 buck shot will work fantastic. The cycling of a round in a dark house will send any bad guy running!!! Actually a 1oz #6 bird shot will work just as good and you will not have the pass thru into the neighbor’s house. Remember never to use reloads for any self protection. Always use factory loads for reliability and especially if you go to court. You may have reduced reloads causing less trauma rather than full house 230 grain Black Talons and 45 Auto Hydra-Shok® JHP like I use, the other side will eat your lunch! I use for light a LED Element K2 that is really bright has a wide solid beam and a Springfield 45XD. To stop a charging intruder, you must penetrate and hit the spinal cord or brain in the right pace to stop them in their tracks. If being charged by someone with a knife, you better be hitting your mark on the first shot!!!
I use both and for High Power Competition on the 1000 yard line I use open sights

3 pins, 30, 40 & 50 yard, the 30 yard is only ¾ inch from the 50 and I can guesstimate 60 accurately. Bow is a HCA 4 Runner, 28 inch Gold Tip behind a 100 grain 3 blade Muzzy launched at 310 fps and 50 yards I can shoot a palm size group. The 30 yard pin is dead on for tree stand shots!

Depends on your equipment and how it is set up. 2 inch has less drag and half the surface area of the 4” to stabilize the arrow. For broad heads, 4” will work better however, on some setups it’s over kill and 2” would be better

Shooting a bow is close to shooting a rifle. Provided the draw length is correct and the bow is at full draw, you should feel a pinching sensation between your shoulder blades. If you’re using a release which I strongly suggest for both medical (nerve damage to fingers) and best for accuracy, you squeeze the trigger as if it was a rifle and follow thru is paramount! Is your bow tuned? And if so is it tuned and everything including arrow length cut, measured and adjusted for you?

I use a loop, a loop will add about another inch to your pull. It only takes a minute for your bow smith to take out the difference on the cam. Make sure he fixes it so it will not slide down on the string during pull back. The loop will also add a little more accuracy because you’re not torquing or by putting rotation in the string with the release. Sounds to me young man there will be a day you like I will rather grab the bow instead of the rifle!

During my 4-year tour (1986-90) at Eielson Air Force Base Alaska, I've been asked how many bears have I taken. I had hundreds of chances. I had my crosshairs on many with a round in the chamber of my 338 Win Mag with Nosler 250 grain partitions loaded at 2800 fps and a harvest ticket in my backpack. An easy one shot clean kill everyone. I never pulled the trigger though. Why you ask? The beauty and respect of one a Hunter to the other (the bear) perhaps? Most of all the cost of having it mounted I couldn't afford and I knew in the back of my mind that if I did pull the trigger, the hunt was over. I wasn't ready for the hunt to end, never. I wanted more days to hunt, just to be out there. Even if I came home empty handed, it didn't matter. The awesome power, to watch a Grizzly role rocks the size of my ATV like a basketball, hunting for rodents. I never have taken a bear until I moved back to Arkansas. Most of all, being alone on a mountain ridge, setting on a giant rock overlooking the endless landscape where perhaps no man ever walked. To watch a snow flurry on a far mountain ridge and feel the Lord setting next to me enjoying what God has made. I may have come home empty handed, but my mind is full of awesome memories it is a experience, I'll never forget! But the most memorable days ever was with my Father
I have a Bushnell mounted on my bow and at full draw I can still use it, I like it!
I would not be surprised! “False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils, except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm those only who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicide, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. They ought to be designated as laws not preventive but fearful of crimes, produced by the tumultuous impression of a few isolated facts, and not by thoughtful consideration of the inconveniences and advantages of a universal decree.” -Ceasare Beccaria, 18th century criminologist, in On Crimes and Punishments

Several things come to mind, some strings will stretch or more than likly twist in the cams but the most probable cause is your release loop moves around during draw or after release, the instant stopping of the bow string. Move your release loop around slightly and shoot it and keep repeating it until its back in alignment. This will also fix your other problems and it happens to me often. Find’ya a good local bow tech to help if your still having problems

While shooting with the Air Force High Power Team as my Father before me, I used nothing but Hornady for individual shoots and for team matches I would use Federal 168 Match which was loaded with Sierra. I find Hornady’s shoot flatter and is the closest bullet design to the Berger VLD’s (very low drag) which cost more. I’ve shot the Berger’s and Sierra’s and my score drops so go figure. Now Nosler Match works fantastic to and I would have used them but the supply was limited at the time. As for the Gamekings, they suck because of core separation every time. Both my 117 grain Sierras out of my 25-06 and 250 grain out of my 338 Win Mag I’ve always found core separation. All the Caribous we shot with the 250 Gameking 250 grain 338’s we had one hole going in and two going out! As my Father before me used nothing but Hornady and they never failed us! Bottom line, Hornady and Nosler is my two #1 bullets for competition and hunting. I love the SST’s for varmints and deer. When I get a chance hopefully this next year to go Elk hunting, I’ll switch to Hornady Spire Points and Nosler Partitions for backup.

Assault with a deadly weapon, terrorist threat, reckless endangerment of discharging a firearm in the air and impersonating an officer. The lady handled it perfectly! Last May 15 a Friday night, had a nutcase woman pull a shotgun out on my daughter and I. What saved her was, I was able to see light behind from the house between the barrel and magazine tube showing the slide was back which means the action was open. I was carrying a licensed concealed Springfield 45XD with 230 grain Hydroshocks. Although the woman admitted what she done the prosecuting attorney would not prosecute and that’s just more reason not to live in Farmington Arkansas. A cool head always prevails!

You kidding right?! Answer is no! It’s not whether or not it’s legal, it will not work I you do want to replace your trigger I sagest a Timney Trigger and here's the link. http://www.timneytriggers.com/sunshop/
I always suggest taking all your gear to a reputable bow shop. They will inspect and setup your equipment to your unique specifications. I have seen shooters with accuracy of “MOB” (Minute of (side of a)Barn”) size groups reduced to tack driving groups at 50 to 60 yards that would rival a rifle. And yes just a little minute adjustment can make all that difference!

As for the Ruger Blackhawk in .357 mag/9mm, the 9mm will shoot with the spread of a shotgun. As for Auto’s stay away from the Springfield XD line. The trigger pull is the longest on the market causing you to shoot low and left and Springfield has admitted it!

AR-15 (for Armalite model 15,[9]) is the common name for the widely-owned[10] semi-automatic rifle which is derived from the selective fire M16-series assault rifle, currently in use by the United States military. ("AR-15" was the original name for the select-fire rifle before it was adopted as the M16. Today, however, "AR-15" is now used almost exclusively to refer to semi-automatic versions of the M16-series rifles.) A HISTORICAL REVIEW OF ARMALITE Edition of April 23, 1999 Few firearm manufacturers have captured the imagination of American Shooters as thoroughly as ArmaLite. ArmaLite first rose to prominence during the late 1950s, with a series of innovative rifles that looked unlike any produced before. Although ArmaLite itself was unable to reap the full benefit of their work, the ArmaLite design team created innovative designs that still are setting the standard by which new models are evaluated. There is great interest in the history of ArmaLite. This document is a team effort that summarizes ArmaLite’s origin in 1954, its corporate shifts and changes over the years, and the developments that have taken place over that period. It ends with the current status of the new company today, 45 years later. It is the official corporate history of ArmaLite. This document was established in an ArmaLite letter dated March 1974, and subsequently updated in 1998 and 1999. It includes information taken from ArmaLite documents whenever possible. It remains a work in progress, with information continuing to arrive from ex-ArmaLite personnel, and new information added as the company matures. Like Colt and most other firearm manufacturers, ArmaLite has passed through a number of management and ownership phases. Each will be discussed, with the participation of company officials of the time used where available. ArmaLite Division, Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation. ArmaLite was first established as a Division of Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation on October 1, 1954. At least two years of privately funded development preceded the Fairchild supported program. The ArmaLite Division of Fairchild is the first phase of the company’s history. There had been very little fundamental development in the small arms industry for over fifty years. Increasing military use of the machine gun and production of semiautomatic rifles were the main significant changes. No fundamental change in military riflery doctrine had been made since the latter half of the nineteenth century, and production materials and techniques were also largely unchanged. ArmaLite believed that a ready market existed for firearms of advanced design featuring lightweight, modern alloys and plastics and economical production procedures. The initial plan was to produce fine sporting firearms for the commerc ial market. It was considered likely that in due time some of the concepts used in the commercial firearms would have acceptance by the military. Shortly after Fairchild established the ArmaLite Division, ArmaLite was invited to submit a rifle to the U.S. Air Force as a replacement for the then-standard survival rifle. A few weeks after receiving information as to this requirement, ArmaLite submitted the AR-5, .22 Hornet Survival Rifle for Air Force evaluation. The AR-5 was adopted and designated the MA-1 Survival Rifle. The initial success with the AR-5 led Fairchild to reverse the strategy of focusing on the commercial market first, then entering the military market. With the adoption of the AR-5 and with a quantity purchase seemingly assured, ArmaLite decided to defer entry into the commercial field until such time as their reputation and financial position were established as a result of military sales. For the next five years all ArmaLite activity was directed to the development of military firearms. The concept of using the latest technical advances in plastics and alloys was the idea of George Sullivan, Chief Patent Counsel for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. Sullivan had started work in his own garage shop after WWII. This work came to the attention of Fairchild in 1953 when Sullivan and Fairchild’s Corporate Secretary, Paul S. Cleaveland, discussed the principles at a meeting of an aircraft industry committee. Cleveland called attention of this work to Richard S. Boutelle, Fairchild’s president and a long-time gun enthusiast. In 1954, Eugene Stoner, who served in the Marines during World War II and who was something of an ordnance expert, became Chief Engineer for ArmaLite. Stoner had been working on small arms independently since WWII. Stoner’s patents form the basis of much of ArmaLite’s work. From the beginning, Charles Dorchester directed and coordinated all development programs, first as General Manager of the ArmaLite Division of Fairchild, later as President of ArmaLite, Inc., and still later as Chairman of the Board. The combined efforts of these three individuals from this point on resulted in revolutionary changes in combat weapon concepts. ArmaLite’s initial project, begun even before Sullivan brought ArmaLite to Fairchild’s attention, was the AR-1 Parasniper, a lightweight bolt action rifle started in 1952. The 1956 success of the later AR-5 caused ArmaLite to shift its attention to military designs. The AR-10 became the main focus of attention beginning in 1955. At that time the Army was considering the Springfield Armory T-44 (an updated Garand) and the T-48, a version of the FN FAL, as replacements for the M1 Garand. ArmaLite hoped to present a rifle capable of displacing both models. The AR-10 was stunningly different than any previous design. It was produced with aircraft grade aluminum receivers, and therefore weighed less than seven pounds. The lightweight material was possible because the bolt locked into a steel extension on the barrel, not into the receiver itself. The stock and other furniture were plastic, while the T-44 and T-48 were of wood. The configuration of the rifle itself, with its integral carrying handle and charging handle distinctively mounted within it, sparked intense curiosity. In the end, the AR-10 wasn’t able to catch up; the T-44 was adopted as the M-14 rifle in 1959. The AR-10 fell victim to both its own weaknesses, normal in early models of any product, prejudice within the Army Ordnance Corps, and the head start of the other rifles. Based on what they saw in the AR-10, however, other Army officials asked ArmaLite to develop a smaller version of the AR-10 in 1956. The ensuing rifle was called the AR-15. Like the AR-10, it was a developmental model. Not only was it too late to be considered against the T-44 and T-48, it didn’t match the long-range marksmanship doctrine of the day. The AR-10 was licensed to the Dutch Arsenal, Artillerie Inrichtingen, for sale on the international market. ArmaLite and its agents and assignees demonstrated the rifle around the world, but sales were limited. Even the Dutch failed to adopt the rifle built in their own arsenal. Despite the background Army interest in a smaller caliber rifle, ArmaLite licensed the designs and trademarks to the AR-10 and AR-15 to Colt’s in January 1959. Early Colt AR-15s, their magazines, and their operators manuals were marked with ArmaLite’s name. Colt’s retained the AR-15 designation on commercial rifles. To this day Colt’s has a model designation with the letters AR, which stands for “ArmaLite”. The mid to late 1950s was a period of intense development at ArmaLite. The engineering staff was especially strong, with Eugene Stoner, James Sullivan, and Robert Fremont present at the same time. The AR-17 12 Gauge Shotgun started development in the mid-1950s. In 1959 ArmaLite developed the AR-7 .22 caliber survival rifle, which exploited some of the features of AR-5. The rifle entered Production for the commercial market. Small numbers were sold to various mi litary forces for use as survival rifles. In 1959 ArmaLite began developing the AR-16, a sheet metal version of the AR-10. Three specimens were produced. The adoption of the M-14 by the Army and ArmaLite’s focus on the AR-10 caused the AR-16 to be dropped. The engineering team started to split up at the end of the decade. Fremont left for Colt in 1959. Sullivan left in 1960, and Stoner left in 1961 to serve as a consultant to Colt. ArmaLite was late with the AR-10 and, in a way, early with the AR-15. With both models gone ArmaLite was in trouble. It’s only rifle in production was the .22 caliber AR-7. It wasn’t enough. The second phase of ArmaLite’s history therefore began in early 1961. ArmaLite Incorporated. In 1961 Fairchild was undergoing financial troubles, and the original principals of ArmaLite acquired ArmaLite from Fairchild, including rights and title to all ArmaLite designs except the AR-10 and AR-15, which had previously been licensed to Colt’s. The organization continued from this time on as ArmaLite, Inc., with substantially the same nucleus of key personnel. From the latter part of 1962 until near the end of 1971 the major portion of the ArmaLite development programs were funded by Capital Southwest Corporation of Dallas, Texas. In November of 1971 Charles Dorchester, Chairman, and Richard Klotzly, President, acquired the majority common stock position in ArmaLite held by Capital Southwest Corporation. It was obvious from Army purchases of the AR-15 that Fairchild had erred in selling the AR-15 in 1959. To recover from that error, ArmaLite set about to develop a new rifle that wouldn’t violate the Stoner gas system patents, which now belonged to Colt’s. The result was the AR-18, which began development in 1963. The combat effectiveness of the .223 caliber cartridge was now well proven. ArmaLite hoped to build a new rifle capable of displacing the AR- 15 in the hands of the Army. The AR-18 combined the lessons of the AR-15 and the AR-16 in a rifle capable of competing for the many expected contracts for new rifles. The AR-18 is best described as a sheet metal AR-15, with a different gas system. It was to prove the main focus of ArmaLite’s efforts for the next two decades. ArmaLite arranged exhaustive tests by the H.P. White laboratory of Belair, Maryland, to verify their claims for the AR-18 with the hope of attaining DOD and State Department endorsement of the rifle toward filling the void existing for a modern combat rifle for friends and allies around the world. The Army conducted tests of ten prototype rifles at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, and at Ft. Benning, Georgia, during 1964. The rifle was considered as “having military potential.” The Army requested an additional 29 rifles in1964 for further testing. These 29 rifles, with a detailed operator’s manual, were produced on a tool room basis in a four-month period in compliance with the government contract. The tests were conducted as part of the Army’s Small Arms Weapons System (SAWS) tests. Not surpris ingly, the early rifles needed further development. With the military market going nowhere fast, sales were shifted to the commercial market. A commercial, semiautomatic-only version of the AR-18 was produced as the AR-180. In 1967 production of the AR-18 was started at the Howa Machinery Company of Nagoya, Japan. For Japanese political reasons the Howa rifles were allowed to be sold only to non-combatant nations, and even then only to non- Asian nations. During the Vietnam War, the AR-18 could not even be exported to the United States. As a result of continued ArmaLite effort, the Army was directed to re-evaluate the AR-18 during at the end of 1969. It was too late. By the end of 1969 the Army had already standardized the M-16, and the AR-18 was unable to displace it. Further efforts focused on overseas and commercial domestic sales. The AR-18 suffered similar results in the United Kingdom a well. The Ministry of Defense first evaluated the AR- 18 in March 1966. It was found to be attractive in terms of its lightweight and ease of manufacture. It suffered, in the eyes of the British, from lack of gas adjustment and the lack of a buffer system. Automatic accuracy was considered somewhat inferior, and it was considered unsatisfactory in mud and “drag sand” conditions. The rifle was modified with reinforcement of the hinge area of the lower receiver, addition of an ejection port cover and an improved muzzle brake/flash suppressor and re-tested in August of 1966. The strengthening was appreciated, but the sand and mud test results were largely unchanged, and the lack of a buffer continued to be criticized. A Howa version was evaluated by MOD in January 1969. While it again failed the mud test, most criticism concerned minor physical characteristics that could be readily resolved. In fairness to the AR-18, the MOD evaluations are somewhat suspect. The Royal Small Arms Factory could hardly be considered objective evaluators. The relationship between Sterling and RSAF was rocky at best, with RSAF benefiting from government preference and a willingness to appropriate the work of others. It’s especially interesting to note that the RSAF’s later 5.56mm rifle, the SA-80, (later adopted as the L85) was nothing more than a bullpup version of the AR-180. That rifle is now regarded as probably the worst of the recent military rifles. Lessons learned during evaluations of the AR-180 were ignored in the development of the L85, and ArmaLite’s knowledge of the mechanism wasn’t available. Nonetheless, it was apparent that the AR-18 had not benefited from the intense field use, criticism, and rework that had been lavished on the AR-15. Major elements of its design have reappeared in several other rifles, but the AR-18 itself remains an unfinished work. The Irish Republican Army illegally acquired a number of Howa AR-180s in the early 1970s, and in 1973 the Japanese government halted all exports of AR-18 and AR-180 rifles. Howa produced 3,927 AR-180s between October 1970 and February 1974. In mid-1968 Arma Lite set up pilot production in its Costa Mesa plant. ArmaLite produced 1,171 AR-18s and 4,018 AR-180s at its Costa Mesa plant between July 1969 and June 1972. The Japanese government subsequently eased it restrictions and allowed the commercial, semi -automatic AR-180 to be exported to the U.S., and by the late 1970s U.S. production halted. In order to concentrate full effort on the military sales program, ArmaLite elected to discontinue its other commercial firearm activities. In mid -1973 ArmaLite sold the AR-7 rifle to Charter Arms. The Japanese restrictions on export of the AR-18 and AR 180 forced ArmaLite to move the production machinery to a new licensed producer. In 1974 Sterling Armament Company of Dagenham, England, was licensed to produce ArmaLite’s rifles. It took 15 months to complete setup and begin production. ArmaLite imported the Sterling rifles into the U.S., and Sterling and ArmaLite both tried to market the rifles around the world. Sterling manufactured 12,362 AR-180s between the 1975 and 1983, when ArmaLite and Sterling were both sold. 10,946 AR-180s were exported to the United States. The AR-18 was highly regarded, but didn’t find the favor that it could have. Even as ArmaLite marketed the new small caliber rifle, FN and HK were selling more traditional 7.62mm rifles around the world. Colt was selling AR- 15s. The AR-18 remained somewhat prone to breakage, and never enjoyed the success ArmaLite expected. The AR-18, however, has proven to be another seminal weapon from ArmaLite. A number of later rifles, including the problem-plagued L85 (UK), the more reputable SA-80 (Singapore) and the new G-35 (Germany) were derived from the AR-18. With the foundering of the AR-18, ArmaLite’s owners elected to sell the company. In 1983 ArmaLite was sold to Elisco Tool Manufacturing Company, of the Philippines. ArmaLite Division of Elisco Tool The short-lived third phase of ArmaLite’s history began with Elisco Tool Manufacturing’s 1983 purchase of ArmaLite. The new ArmaLite operation was headed by an Englishman hired to serve as interim President, Mr. Bruce Swain. Mr. John Ugarte later replaced Swain. ArmaLite continued to market existing rifles and parts manufactured by Sterling under the leadership of the new vice-president of Marketing, Mr. Joe Armstrong. Elisco Tool had successfully produced the M16A1 for the Philippine armed forces and police. Difficulties with Colt over M16 licensing prompted Elisco to seek another 5.56mm rifle, and the AR-18 was the only real contender. Inventory, tooling, and machinery were therefore dispatched from Sterling’s plant to the Philippines. The process fell apart not in the U.S. market, but due to political events in the Philippines themselves. In short, Ferdinand Marcos was overturned and went into exile. The political and economic links of the government were dramatically shifted, and Elisco was unable to carry out the AR-18 production. The U.S. arm of the operation was closed in 1987. ArmaLite Incorporated II Independent of ArmaLite, Karl Lewis and Jim Glazier formed a company named Eagle Arms in Coal Valley Illinois in 1986. Lewis had manufactured a wide variety of both commercial and military parts for M-16 rifles, and Eagle Arms assumed the increasingly distracting retail business from Lewis’ company, Lewis Machine and Tool (LMT). Eagle Arms initially marketed M16 and AR-15 type rifle parts. The early Stoner patents had expired, and Eagle was able to build both parts and complete rifles. In 1989 Eagle commenced production of complete rifles, with LMT serving as the major supplier. In January 1994 Mr. Mark Westrom purchased the company. Westrom was a former Army Ordnance Officer and a civilian employee of the Weapons Systems Management Directorate of the Army’s Armament Materiel and Chemical Command (AMCCOM) at nearby Rock Island Arsenal. After the purchase, he continued producing Eagle Arms EA -15 rifles. Plans were made to add a line of telescopic sights to the product line. Westrom’s background in military Service Rifle competition produced a focus on high grade target rifles even before the AR-15/M-16 rifles came to dominate American Service Rifle competition in the mid-90s. In November 1994 Westrom decided to initiate the design of a .308 caliber AR-10 type rifle, to be called the “M-10” in line with Eagle’s production of .223 caliber “M-15” rifles. Work on the project began in November 1994. The bulk of the engineering work was contracted out to LMT, with an experienced Quality Assurance expert, Mr. David Dorbeck, doing the bulk of the work. By coincidence, the president of the company manufacturing telescopic sights for Eagle, Dr. John Williams, had worked for ArmaLite in his youth. He introduced Westrom to the former Production Manager for ArmaLite, Mr. John McGerty. McGerty led Westrom to John Ugarte, the most recent President of ArmaLite. Ugarte had retained rights to the ArmaLite trademark. In early 1995 Westrom purchased those rights, and production of ArmaLite rifles resumed in Illinois. The corporation was reorganized as ArmaLite, with Eagle Arms converted to a division of ArmaLite. First shipments of new ArmaLite rifles began in 1995. With the reorganization as ArmaLite, the M-10 rifle was renamed. ArmaLite/Fairchild had already used the AR-10 designation with its 1950s era .308, and had developed the AR-10a as an improvement on it. The planned M-10 rifle series was designated the AR-10B series, and deliveries commenced in January 1996. The AR-10B rifle was developed using unusual reliance on computer design and simulation. In fact, the rifle was never prototyped. Individual sub-components were tested on a special lower receiver made of two slabs of aluminum fitted to an SR-25 upper receiver assembly. The full prototype AR-10B was the first rifle off the production line. This approach was risky, but required by the limitations on cash at that time. It proved stunningly successful. Results from the prototype and the first production rifles disclosed that the only error was in not installing a firing pin retarding spring. The spring was planned early in the development, but left out of the final design because there seemed to be no need for it. Subsequent problems with the surplus ammunition used by some customers required manufacture of the spring. Fortunately, space for the spring was built into the Bolt Carrier, and it was quickly dispatched to the field and the production line. Subsequent adjustments to dimensions and tolerances of the AR-10B have been minor. In late 1997 ArmaLite began development of a new rifle, the AR-50 .50 caliber rifle. Chambered for the Browning Machine Gun cartridge. This innovative single-shot rifle was designed strictly for the commercial market. It was introduced to the industry at the 1999 SHOT Show, and is in production at the time of this writing. The AR-50 is an innovative single shot rifle conceived by Mark Westrom, and the design team of George and Paul Reynolds. George Reynolds also brought two new projects of his own to ArmaLite in 1997: a Blank Firing System and Sub- Caliber Device for the Mk 19 Mod 4 Grenade Machine Gun. These projects have been designated the AR-22 and AR-23. ArmaLite continues to produce firearms and design new ones. It has shipped far more .223 caliber rifles than ArmaLite did during its first through third phases. It has shipped more AR-10s than ArmaLite/Fairchild and Artillerie Inrichtingen combined. There are more active development projects in process today than any time since 1961. Throughout the past 45 years, ArmaLite’s durability has been based on one core theme: the innovation present in its firearms. That theme continues to serve both as the basis of ArmaLite’s corporate strategy, and as a challenging image to maintain. ARMALITE’S DEVELOPMENTS. The following firearms were developed or produced by ArmaLite. Other AR family firearms were designed by Eugene Stoner, but not developed by ArmaLite, and aren’t listed. AR-1 (1954 and before) “Parasniper” rifle, using either military or sporting calibers, including 7.62 NATO. The Parasniper is a very high quality, lightweight bolt action rifle designed as a fine sporting rifle or for special military sniping operations. The AR-1 began life at ArmaLite’s first location in Hollywood, California. It broke new ground by using foam filled fiberglass stock and an anodized aluminum barrel with a thin steel liner. A variety of receivers were to be used, with a Remington action common. The rifle with scope weighs a modest 6 pounds. Very few AR-1s were made. AR-5 (1954-55) A bolt action, .22 Hornet survival rifle adopted by the Air Force in 1956. It weighed a mere 2 ¾ pounds. It distinguishing characteristic was the ability to detach the barrel from the action, and the action from the stock, and place both within the stock. With the buttcap replaced, the rifle would float. The government specification for the MA-1 called for a second, .22 long rifle barrel to be attached outside the stock. After adopting the AR-5 as the MA-1, the Air Force failed to follow through with a purchase. The main effect of the AR-5 was to whet ArmaLite’s appetite for government business. It led to development of the AR-7. AR-7 (1959-60) The AR-7 Explorer was the first commercial item to be put into production by the ArmaLite Division of Fairchild. This rifle is the civilian version of the Air Force adopted AR-5 Survival Rifle. The AR-7 fires the popular .22 long rifle rimfire cartridge. The rifle disassembles without the use of tools and stows inside its plastic butt stock. The AR-7 weighs as little as 2 ¾ pounds and will float in water, either assembled or in the stowed configuration. The action is semi -automatic and is fed from an eight-round magazine. The AR-7 was sold to Charter Arms in xx. It has been in intermittent production since. ArmaLite reintroduced it in early 1998. AR-10 (1955-56) Basic infantry rifle, caliber 7.62mm NATO. The AR-10 was conceived by Eugene Stoner, and was tested by US. Ordnance as early as 1956 at Springfield Armory. It was licensed to Artillerie Inrichtingen in Holland in 1957, and with the AR-15 was licensed to Colt’s Patent Firearms Company in 1959. The AR-10 combined a number of previous features with a new gas system patented by Stoner. In the Stoner system, gas ported off the barrel travels down a tube back into the upper receiver, and into the bolt carrier. It enters an expansion chamber, where it expands and drives the carrier to the rear. The rearward movement of the carrier transferred by a cam pin riding in a curved path and engaging the bolt, forces the bolt to rotate to unlock. (Common reports that the Stoner system is copied from the Swedish Ljungman system are incorrect: the Ljungman system has a tube carrying gas ported off the barrel, but the tube simply directs the gas into a cavity in the top of the carrier to blow the carrier to the rear.) The AR-10 was later improved with lessons learned from the early AR-15s. The new model was designated the AR-10a. It was produced in prototype form only. The AR-10 was intended to compete with Springfield’s M-14 rifle and FN’s FAL. It was, unfortunately, a bit too late. Although it showed great promise during tests, it required a bit of further development. It was too late. The major effect of the AR-10 was to lead to Army interest in a similar rifle of smaller caliber. That rifle became the AR-15. AR-10B (1994-96) An update of the AR-10 placed in production in 1996. The AR-10 was fielded in very small numbers: less than 6,000. Despite the small numbers, the fame of the rifle grew to take the rifle to cult status. It was, after all, the more powerful and rare precursor to the AR-15. Civilian shooters took great pains to recover used AR-10s from the surplus market and convert them to civilian rifles by means of new, semi-automatic only receivers. The popularity of the AR-10 rifle led Knight’s Manufacturing and, later, ArmaLite to return it to production. Knight entered the market first with an AR-10 derivative called the SR-25. The SR-25 combined features of the AR-10 with as many parts of the AR-15 as could be used. The ArmaLite AR- 10B was then patterned on the SR-25 rifle. To improve function, the ArmaLite AR-10B employs far fewer parts from the M-15/M-16 rifles than the SR-25, and uses a modified version of the proven M-14 rifle magazine. AR-15 (1956-1959) Basic infantry rifle using ArmaLite developed .223 caliber ammunition. The AR-15 was licensed to the Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company in January 1959. The U.S. Air Force completed tests of the AR-15 in January 1961. The Air Force procured 8,500 rifles in 1961 and standardized the AR-15 in 1963. 85,000 rifles were purchased in that year. The military designation of the AR-15 is M-16. The Army also ordered 85,000 rifles in 1963. An additional 35,000 were ordered in 1964, 100,000 in 1965, and 100,000 in 1996. These rifles were initially issued primarily to combat troops in the Dominican Republic and to Special Forces, Airborne, helicopter crews, Air Commando and other special category troops in Vietnam. The M-16 was type classified standard A in 1965 and became the military’s basic service rifle. AR-16 (1959-60) The AR-16 is a basic infantry rifle of 7.62mm NATO caliber. The primary reason for the development of the AR- 16 was to produce a weapon with the performance capabilities of the AR-10/AR-15 series, but at a greatly reduced production cost. Another consideration was to make a rifle less difficult to produce in countries without advanced technological resources. Although the AR-16 didn’t enter production, elements of its design influenced the 1995 design of the AR-10B. AR-17 (1956-62) The AR-17 is an innovative semi-automatic shotgun featuring a hard-anodized aluminum receiver and barrel and a plastic stock. The barrel was equipped with replaceable chokes. The AR-17 was called the “Golden Gun” due to the color of the aluminum components. Two thousand sets of parts for the AR-17 were produced, but only 1,200 guns were sold. The AR-17 never met commercial success; it was semi -automatic, but held only two shots. It was lightweight, but was marketed to trap and skeet shooters, who normally fire many shots per day. AR-18 (1963-65) Just as the AR-16 is basically a sheet metal version of the AR-10, the AR-18 is a sheet metal version of the AR-15. The AR-18 was an effort to correct the 1959 mistake of selling the AR-15 to Colt’s. As the AR-15 became successful, ArmaLite needed a rifle that could compete in the same market. The AR-18 is a .223 caliber, gas operated, 6.9 pound rifle equipped with a folding stock. It is capable of both full and semi-automatic fire. The AR-18 uses steel stampings instead of allow forgings, this simplifying manufacture and greatly reducing production costs. The main functional differences include the use of a Tokarev style sliding gas cylinder under the handguards that avoided violating the Stoner gas system patent that was sold to Colt’s. The new system had the advantage of keeping powder residue out of the action. The second difference was the use of dual operating springs on rods in the upper receiver, which allowed the stock to fold to the side. AR-22 (1998-present) The AR-22 is a Blank Firing Device for the Mk 19 Mod 4 40mm Grenade Machine-gun, and is designed for training or testing the Mk 19. It employs the standard 7.62mm NATO Blank. The AR-22 was conceived by CW4 John Miller, and designed by George Reynolds. Reynolds brought it to ArmaLite when he began work on the ArmaLite AR-50 rifle (see below). AR-23 (1998-present) The AR-2 is a Sub-Caliber Training Device for the Mk 19 Mod 4 Grenade Machine-gun. It will employ a special tracer cartridge designed to follow the same ballistic arc of the 40mm grenade. The AR-22 was conceived by CW4 John Miller, and designed by George Reynolds. Like the AR-22, Reynolds brought it to ArmaLite when he began work on the ArmaLite AR-50 rifle (see below). AR-50 (1998-99) ArmaLite’s normal pattern of sequential designation of models was altered for the AR-50. The model reflects the rifle’s caliber. It is chambered for the .50 caliber Browning Machine Gun cartridge, and is capable of being built to accept the more powerful Russian 12.7mm cartridge. It features a unique stock made largely of aluminum. The forend, in particular, is interesting. It is extruded with a V cross section that mates with an octagonal receiver. This allows precise, repeatable bedding with no hand labor. The buttstock includes a vertically adjustable butt pad and adjustable cheek rest. The initial AR-50 departs from ArmaLite’s normal trend towards lightweight rifles: it weighs 41 pounds. It is intended for the commercial market, where the weight adds comfort when firing the powerful cartridge. Shorter and lighter versions are in development. OTHER PROJECTS ArmaLite has a number of models in development or under consideration. They will be announced as soon as practical. DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO ADD? As noted above, this is a document in transition. ArmaLite is seeking additions or corrections to this record, and is focusing especially hard on participation by previous ArmaLite employees. If you have information to add, historical documents, photographs, or hardware, please contact ArmaLite at: P.O. Box 299 Geneseo IL 61254 Email: Armalite@geneseo.net

I’ve ran ranges for public shooting and the REMINGTON 700 right out of the box I find to be the best shooter. As for the cartridge to shoot 308 vs 30-06, I’d go with the 30-06 and strongly suggest out of all the cartridges on the market the 30-06 is my #1 choice for Joe the Hunter hands down! Yes you can get you a big magnum; however I’ve witnessed more bang flops on Moose with the 30-06 with over the counter 180 grain ammunition than the shoulder thumping ultra big bores like the 375 H&H & 458/460’s etc. It’s all about accuracy and the ability to hit the vital areas we refer to here at F&S as “MOP”! Go with the 30-06, you will be glad you did!

ishawooa as for the 7 mm's with their higher BC bullets that will outperform either? I must disagree with you Sir. Staking the 7mm Rem Mag 175 grain against the 30-06 190 grain, the 30-06 is a bit flatter and faster and still pulling away at 1000 yards compared to the 7mm Rem Mag 175 grain. I agree with the outcome of the trial, no jail time. The Father paid the most ultimate price, the loss of a lifelong friend and Son. Even to look in the Mothers eyes is beyond words and comprehension. What harsher punishment can be, even Capital Punishment to some would be welcome to end the heart and soul sheering pain of the loss of a love one yet alone another life. Hunter Safety is always paramount and we can never be complacent and must be vigilant at all times. My heart and prayers go out to the Father and Mother and Family, and Friends and to the community I hope someone learns something from this tragedy! As for Caledonia County prosecutor Lisa Warren, I find her pathetic trying to score points and add notches to her resume. I find no glory in what she tried to do!!

It all depends on the caliber, weight and construction of the bullet. All my shots with my 22-250 are behind the shoulder taking out both lungs and perhaps the heart. Sometimes I take a shoulder shot if I’m using my 25 or 30-06 I prefer behind the shoulder taking both lungs and heart most of all. Better blood trail and shorter distance to track!!

I would use it and get out every day as much as possible to get comfortable and build up confidence shooting it. If you need to turn it down, I would suggest you to take it to a bow shop. There have been serious accidents of the bows turned down too much, in other words the limb bolts have been backed out to far causing the limbs to come unhinged causing damage and injury to the shooter! My bow is set at 70 and that’s where I keep it

But the most memorable days of hunting was with my Father!

tom donohue is right and a 1 Elk are definably not like deer when hit, they take allot more punishment. A 308 or 30-06 with a 180 grain would serve you best. Magnums are for those who can hit “MOP” at longer ranges and the 30-06 will do just fine! As for the hand gun? As I said in Alaska, if you plan to use it for bear protection you need to remove the front sight so when you shoot that Grizz and swipes it out of your hand and shove it up your wazzo it won’t hurt as much! Be sides, its additional bulk and weight, your better off leaving it in camp like WAMtnhunter suggested! When you gain experience in shooting Magnums then that’s the time to use it. Personally I prefer the 30-06 over the 300 Mags and if I need the extra knockdown power then I bring out my Browning 338 Win Mag!

Opening day of bow season on October 1st 2006 I had nice buck run and stop 48 yards out and I made a perfect lung shot just over the heart. When the buck ran over the hill about 100 yards out of sight, I heard what sounded like a screen door slamming. What the “H” was that, I packed up my stand and equipment and trailed my buck and found this fella was gutting my deer out. This crossbow hunter thought it was Christmas morning and said this is my first deer! I found his bolt and it was clean and I had the bloody arrow in my quiver. Do I ruin this new sportsman for life or do I do what I preach about promoting good Sportsmanship? Yes I agree with all of you and bylaw that was my deer! In Arkansas I’m allowed 4 deer pending the units I go to. I cheerfully complemented this new hunter on his first deer and counted the deer against my license. To answer your question, yes I would let the kid have it. He did put the first bullet in and a kill is a kill no matter how long it takes for the animal to die!

The 270 is actually a 27-06 or 30-06 necked down to .270 diameter. As for the 308 is designed for the military, is a 30-06 shortened for as shorter action and 150 feet per second slower the 30-06 shooting the same bullet.

kolbster Unless you’re going to shoot Competition with that 700 SPS, I'de go with the BDL or CDL. I’ve proven too many to times you can do a lot with the 700ADL’s and BDL’s including the Ruger M77’s. Instead of shooting sticks etc, I use a Military 1 ¼ in sling identical to what I used in competition in the same way both on the range and in the field. As for the 308, it’s no punk! On the 1000 yard line up against Match Bolt Guns chamber in 300 Win Mags topped with extraterrestrial telescopes of great magnification, I was able to hold my own with my open sighted Ultra Match M1A chambered in 308 and it sure pissed them off it did for a Crusty O’Sarge to out shoot them. But seriously if you stood behind these shooters and see the shock wave transverse from the recoiling rifle to their feet and back up, you can see how shooting the 308 I wasn’t concerned about getting the snit kicked out of me instead I was concentration on what the elements around me were doing and placing that shot in the “X” ring. Bottom line? If I was going to carry a Remington 700 SPS, I’ll just stick to my M1A. Unless you just want to carry the extra weight? Personally, I’d go with a 700 BDL preferably with a 24 in barrel with a synthetic stock topped with a really good scope such as the Leupold or Sightron. At the end of the day especially when it comes to that once in a life time shot you’ll be glad your equipped right for it!!

Although easy to like and will burn the hair off your knuckles (LOL!), smokeless powder is a flash in a pan! Looking for something that really works and I mean really works even after being stored wet for a long long time! Well by’golly get’ya a small jar of good old fashion Vaseline from and a magnesium fire starter stick from your local Wal-Mart. So simple of an operation I bet David can do it.

Just shooting “MOP” will pretty much do the job alone! I prefer Hornady soft point bullets all the way around including SST’s. The best bullet for deer in my 30-06 is the Hornady 130 grain soft point with 54 grains of IMR4064 with a Federal 210 primer cranking out about 3300 fps. With just 20 grains less bullet weight there is less kick than the 150 grain and I’ve noticed I’m getting the same penetration as the 150 with increased hydroshock! There is nothing mystical about having and must have “NUCLEAR TIPPED BULLET” to get the “BANG FLOP” as one of the guys put it. If shooting “MOP” with a 22-250 with a 55 grain soft point to down the biggest mullie, then why do you need a Barnes or Partition bullet! ken.mcloud said it best! “So, I think that the superior killing power of larger rounds is largely in our heads.(likely testosterone induced) A flat-shooting round that you can accurately place will produce as many if not more "bang-flop" kills as a heavy caliber round.”

As far as rifle, find you something you really like. In the past ten years they have all come to be nail drivers. Far as the cartridge, compared to those who shoot 270, I can do the same with my 338 Win Mag, but I love my 25-06 the best. Back in 80, I sold my 300 Win Mag to a fella and replaced it with a 25-06 and never regretted it. This opening season I’ll more in likely will be using my M1A! Now far as hunting Elk and Moose, the 30-06 does a fine job and find the 30 cal Magnums isn’t worth getting the extra kick for gaining only 150-200 feet per second. I have a Browning A-Bolt in 338 Win Mag and it’s a tack driver and taken one Moose and two caribou with it and backed alot of other bear hunters in Alaska with it. What you say about handling recoil, if you’re going to get recoil don’t go with the 30 cal mags, go with the 338 Win Mag.

In a nutshell, I was on the Air Force Shooting Team as my Father before me and rand the Base range for recreational shooting at Eielson AFB Alaska for four years solid. The best bang flop on a Moose I ever witnessed was a teenager shooting a 30-06 with factory loaded 180 grain Remington Core-Lokt®, so you can figure that one out on your own! I’ve also watch Moose taken with 270 effectively with 150 grain Nosler Partitions. It’s more of bulle placement rather than the bigger the gun the better or better yet the ability to shoot “MOP” at the given range. 30-30’s with 170 grain work just as good with a well placed shot! From Clays archives of bookmarks, places, information and things to read, ken.mcloud said it best! “So, I think that the superior killing power of larger rounds is largely in our heads.(likely testosterone induced) A flat-shooting round that you can accurately place will produce as many if not more "bang-flop" kills as a heavy caliber round.” Bottom line, if I was using a 30-06 for Moose, any good constructed bullet will work and the top two would be the Hornady 190 grain Soft Point Boat Tail and the 180 grain Nosler Partition. Your 30-06 is just fine with 180grn Barnes Triple shock for moose!

Doesn’t matter if it’s a young hunter or professional, I love my 3 bladed 100 grain Muzzy’s! Some day perhaps the next time out, the trophy of a LIFE TIME will step out and you want to have the best! I used to love the heavier grain broad heads, but I found to keep the velocity up and flat trajectory, the lighter the better to a point. A 28” Gold Tip with a 100 grain Muzzy blows thru them like a rifle bullet leaving a gaping wound! One more thing! I don’t recommend mechanical broad heads I’ve lost two deer in a row because of it. All the energy was lost on impact to open them! Arrow is at 310 fps!!

All of you are right and a +1 for you all! Weatherby is kinda like the Hummer, expensive and what it can do, the Win Mag in the caliber is 150 fps half the velocity of my bow worth the 3 to 4 times the ammo? Weatherby could be flying off the shelf as I call their Customer Service one day, they are too damn proud of a rounded shoulder cartridge and of course for deer, like all of you said dead is dead and my 22-250, 25-06 and 30-06 I have reached out to 700+ yards and all bang flops upon connecting! Once again and I give credit and thank you for what ken.mcloud said it best! “So, I think that the superior killing power of larger rounds is largely in our heads.(likely testosterone induced) A flat-shooting round that you can accurately place will produce as many if not more "bang-flop" kills as a heavy caliber round.”

So under your own definition of assault rifles the Remington Model 750™ Woodsmaster™ is a assault rifle along with anything else that is a “semiautomatic gas operated rifle” or does it have to be “gas operated just have to look bad?? Let me gets this right, so if a person goes hunting, walks in to the woods, sets down for 8 hours and bags the B&C record Elk in a business suit and drove there in a Mercedes Benz instead of wearing camo, driving an old banged up Ford pickup truck running on 4 cylinders instead of 6 and all that other foo foo stuff he isn’t a hunter comparing your blurred misconstrued definition of “Assault Rifle” right? There is a lot about CWD we still don’t know about. It wasn’t until recently discovered hepatitis C, Military Personnel are at 5 times more risk of being exposed to it than the national average. If you ever received shots from a pneumatic gun then you do need to get tested for it. Bottom line, When the “Lab Coat Guys” think they figured it all out, Mother Nature throws in a curve ball!
A good Ruger standard 6 inch barrel Mark II will do you just fine and the extra whatever would be extra weight. In Alaska I used a 22 6 inch barrel Ruger Mark II for Grouse and rabbits. Here in Arkansas I use it for squirrel hunting.

Dry firing is one thing, having the endurance to hold and maintain that position is even more so for a 100 round match. Did you know over the counter Sudafed will cost you! It’s true, although it will make you feel much better, anything that raises your heart rate, affect your nervous system and affects your digestive system like eating and drinking cokes will have negative results on your ability to shoot at your best. The best score I ever shot is the day I forgot my meds so go figure! Lifting and holding 5 and 10 pounds weights, doing arm curls and a holding light weight out to build up your stamina, walking etc to improve your cardiovascular system to lower your heart rate, endurance and able to relax etc is the key!

I did the same with a 22 Long Rifle on a nice buck that was hit by a car back in 78. It goes along with the ability to consistency of making a clean kill every time and the 22 Mag doesn’t have. Take the 22-250 driving a bullet almost twice as fast and 15 grains heavier sure makes a deference!

I’ve worked Search and Rescue for years and found you can carry allot of stuff and not have what you need. kvlazer22 has good items for starters and I will add these items too, A good shovel Heavy duty hand winch Small jar of Vaseline and magnesium fire stick for starting a fire. A 2x2 cloth saturated with Vaseline will burn 6 to 10 minutes. The #1 item is “SPOT” personnel satellite tracking unit. Costs about $150.00 and it works great! I have one and my wife can track my progress to see the location and previous locations. WWW.FINDMESPOT.COM

A +1 for Del in KS! I have one daughter, 2 stepdaughters and two stepsons. Out of the three girls, I get more respect out of my Redheaded Italian Blooded Stepdaughter than the other two put together. Cut your Stepfather some slack and treat him as if he is your father. Of course now days, what respect do kids have for their parents yet alone their elders anyhow! A while back, I had a kid come up to me at a local High School and say, “I’M 18 YEARS OLD AND I’M A MAN!” and he still lived at home so go figure! O’did I wanted to take this boy to the gym and give him the the long overdue spanking his parents should have given him. One more thing dakohta14 if you ever get the chance to hang out with me, you better change your attitude! Just go ahead and cal me a a$$ hole step dad and my Redheaded Italian blooded Stepdaughter will kick the crap out of you!
Q:Where is the best place to find the really big buck and in what kind of terrain?

The biggest whitetail bucks are in the nastiest places known to man. You can’t even get on your hands and knees to enter these areas. Both monster Mule and whitetail I watched them lay down and hunters walked within feet of them. One area I hunt, I look as far up this one trail as I go up this mountain ridge on my ATV and watch the does and small bucks lay down within 15 feet off the trail and soon as I pass by up comes there head! One of the things I learned, the deer will pattern you and the other hunting pressure and adjust their movements to avoid you or just move out of the area. That’s why I like to hunt on Tuesday thru Thursday s.

Del in Kansas pretty much nailed it! I found the bucks running the ridge tops just past the hunting pressure. A little pressure helps but the monster bucks are in the thickest and most hardest place to get to!

Thats the reason I don't live in the northeast!

It all depends what your doing with it and as far as shooting off the bench, I have a 03-A3 30-06 that shoot 1/2 MOA! And I kicked butt on the 300 Win Mag shooters topped with extraterrestrial scopes on 1000 yard line with a open sighted M1A and M14's, so go figure! Just up an embankment of a road or trail when you shoot quickly back up drop your tail gate and let it role in! Buddy let me tell you something! Before you pull that trigger, ask yourself how in the hell are you going to get it out! It takes 3 big guys to lift a hind quarter to place it on a ATV so go figure and don’t forget the shoe string to tie off the esophagus to prevent the stomach contents gurgitating all over the place during butchering!

I killed a coyote once with a 12 ga Browning Auto 5 and yes it did kill the coyote. One of two things killed the Coyote after shooting it 47 times with #5 bird shot; did it die from shooting it 47 times or did it die from Lead Poisoning. Bottom Line, I wouldn’t use nothing smaller than #4 Buck and at close range!

What part of the country you in and what part of the year you plan to hunt? You must find what they’re eating and habits for that area. I've found every bear has its own area and tracking them is a difficult but not impossible. I have called bears in while varmint calling. Be careful because they slip in and out without you never knowing it. In areas like the tundra of Alaska you’ll find the bears in grassy hill sides in the spring and down on the river areas during the salmon runs. In the lower 48, you’ll have more luck with bears that have become a nuisance raiding garbage cans. Here in the Ozarks, I find more bears skirting the edges of small towns and parks where hunting pressure is very low and quite. You just got to get out and search and ask questions of the locals. Check the local Game and Fish authority and see if they can put you on to one. Remember the slightest twig break or scenting you will put a bear over to the next county! Bottom line, total patience and a lot of long range glassing is your best bet!

2nd Generation Air Force High Power Team now retired. We did it all! I remember up at Camp Richardson Alaska at the State Championship, they had their first rattle battle. The General for the State Of Washington Army Nation Guard flew his boys up and we the Air Force Team of recreational shooters blew everyone away! I’ve tried Sierra and Berger bullets and there ok if you want to be with the “IN” crowd. But if you really want to kick ass, go with the Hornady and Nosler bullets and remember to come down 2 ½ clicks on the 1000 yard line with the Hornady’s! Started out with M1 Garand then two years later built my M1A Super Match, Hart 1-10 barrel, double lugged, McMillan Forest Stock Hornady 168 Match works best! 41.0 grains IMR4064 41.2 grains IMR4895 44.0 grains Winchester 748 Federal 210m
