I agree with huntcamp...every hunt I have is successful because Im with family and friends. The kill is just an added bonus that sort of "puts a cherry on top" for the overall season. Dont get me wrong I love actually shooting and harvesting big game, but the other 364 days of that year when Im preparing my gear for the hunt, scouting with hunting buddies, and just telling stories from past hunting years at deer camp is what I live for

BOLT ACTION ONLY!! It doenst matter what brand of semi auto it is, they all have a chance to jam up due to fouling in the action. I hunted with a semi for a while and even kept it as clean as i could. However one extremely cold morning I seen a buck and shot behind some thick brush. It just so happened that I had hit him but not in the spot I wanted to because of the thick brush he was in. About two seconds later he walked forward into a wide open area and CLICK!!! my gun was jammed....last time i EVER hunt with a semi auto....EVER...ps the ending to that story is horrible...not enough blood to track him down and there was no snow on the ground. After two days of searching we found nothing..hopefully hes still out there somewhere

Q:What steps should I take towards purchasing a bow? I've never hunted before.I need a bow.HELP.
from ROLLINGTHUNDER37 on 06.28.09

Instead of going to a large sport shop that just wants to sell you a bow, go to a local archery shop. When I bought my bow they fitted it with all the necessary gear for me, and then even brought me to their indoor range to ensure my bow was accurate. This way you can try out a couple different bows that they have set up and see which one fits you the best. To me it just feels like sometimes the smaller businesses put in a little more time and effort then the large franchise stores. Good luck!

The main reason that I have multiple guns is because of the ever changing terrain and style of hunt I am faced with. If I am going to sit in my tree stand for the day and watch an area, I have no problem bringing a heavier rifle. However, if the terrain is rugged and thick (which it normally is) and I plan on stalking/walking/scouting, I will bring a lighter mountain rifle so that I dont feel as worn out at the end of the day. Also weather can justify bringing a different rifle out to hunt. If its raining and the storm of the century is on the way, I will bring my rifle with a synthetic stock and stainless barrel..but all in all its personal preference..I just like having the option of taking out a different rifle based on conditions and style hunting I am going to do

I think its a good idea..I also mentioned to F & S about adding in a application that will send you a email everytime someone answers your questions..maybe this currently happens and I just cant figure out how to turn it on but it would be nice to know when someone leaves a answer...otherwise I just have to check my questions from time to time throughout the day

also depends on how comfortable you are shooting from a tree stand. As long as you practice shooting from a tree stand you shouldnt have a problem though...I prefer a blind, that way theres no tree blocking your shot when that big monster comes from behind you!

I dont know if anyone here has read or follows the beniot brothers, but in one of their books they describe a hunt where they track this big buck for miles and eventually the deer shed its antlers while they were tracking him! talk about a waste of a couple miles hiking and hunting through the woods
Q:How long should you leave a trail cam before you check the pictures?

as long as the camera has a time and date stamp, let it sit out for as long as the battery will last if right before hunting season..This way you could try and pattern the deer if there are multiple pictures of them at a certain time of the day..my batteries last a little over a week i think
I agree with dokklee...cabelas is obsolete when it comes to customer service. I think they would let you return pretty much anything even if you have already used it in the field. The products that both companies sell are the same but its the service that a company provides to their customers that makes a huge difference on whether or not a customer will return time and time again to buy gear. I also feel like cabelas has more of a selection of "cabela" brand hunting clothing but thats just me. I dont know if bass pro shops supports veterans and military personnel either...but I DO know that cabelas usually once a month or every other month will have a 20% discount for individuals who can provide a military ID

go to your local gunshop and pick up what the promoters call a "tactical rifle" and then you will understand what these guys are talking about. But i do get where your coming from..you would think a rifle that a sniper uses expecially in war time senarios would be light weight for ease of travel and use

It only takes one dumb*** person to ruin it for everyone. If you allow 4 wheelers in, you just have to realize that not everyone is as respectful to the enviroment as i assume all of us are. Ive seen places where 4 wheel drivers will tear through trails, cut down more trees on the trail which they dont have the permission to do, leave trash and garbage from lunch on the trail, and do plenty of other rediculous things that push my opinion to remove all access with motorized vehicles...plus if your to lazy to walk that far back in the woods, you dont deserve the deer that are back there (only exception is for disabled individuals)
Q:Has anybody used the active scrape drippers? What are your thoughts?

I have always been told to pee in scrapes too. But I actually just came across an article talking about "deer dirt." Its dirt that is pre-mixed with deer urine that you can buy online. supposibly it is waterproof too because somehow they combine the urine and the send in a "special way" so it wont wash away after a rain storm...if this is the case then I definetly want some of this dirt..

My question is what hunter (without the intent of poaching and shooting another deer past their limit for the season) would be wondering around in an isolated area with no one around and just so happen to have a deer rifle with them? But if i somehow got myself in this situation I would definetly let the deer walk...one monster buck is no excuse to lose you liscense and go to jail. Also if you got caught you wouldnt get any credit for the deer anyways. What are you going to tell all your friends, "yea well the buck i shot earlier in the season just happened to grow a few more points and about 50 more pounds, come check it out!!" haha i dont think so
