Though the possible record largemouth bass caught in Japan may be talk of the fishing world right now, there have been some other impressive catches in the last few weeks that will turn some heads, too. Gleaned from news sources around the globe, here are the photos of the these record contenders.
There’s a shocker. Three years ago, I woke up the sound of four coyotes going ballistic in my backyard. I walked out on the deck, turn on the flood light, and watched the $%#@%#s tear my cat Jax to shreds. Now, a new study confirms—just in case I should have trouble believing my own eyes—that:
I enjoy a good beef steak as much as the next guy, but eating one is a rarity for me. My freezer is stocked with venison most of the time, and my wife and I have literally raised our kids on deer meat. In fact, Shari is something of a venison snob, turning up her nose at the bland flavor and fat-laden nature of beef. It is a nice situation for a deer hunter to face, though I do feel the pressure to kill a deer at the first opportunity to, in the words of the old “Beverly Hillbillies” theme song “keep my family fed.”
Both taste good in their own right. I just tend to prefer venison over beef because it is more fun and cheaper for me to acquire. But then again, I do love a nice beef steak that came straight from the grill.
Last week, I posted a blog featuring the latest installment of F&S Hook Shots filmed on the Susquehanna River during a smallmouth trip. In the video, our guide Eric Kerber talks about a new lure from Sebile called the Magic Swimmer. While I have been and always will be a great advocate of classic Rapala and Rebel Minnows for smallies, I have to admit this new Sebile stuff is pretty wild and has a shimmy like you wouldn't believe.
Where I'm from, the officer comes and checks out the roadkill, makes sure it's dead, then lets you take it if you want it. That's it. What you do with the animal from that point on is all okay.
My local archery shop owner has a favorite saying: “There ain’t many of us as good as the bows we shoot.” There is a lot of truth in that saying, but it only truly comes home when you witness a truly great shot pick up a bow—preferably the same one you’re using—and really show his stuff.
That's very impressive, not many people can do that. There is also a group called Master Casters who do the same thing with fishing rods and reels using lures and sinkers to hit targets. The kid should join their group!
A long time ago, I posted a blog about a brief phase I went through where I decided to take up home taxidermy. Let's just say I thought that phase was long over...until I visited the taxidermy studio of Michael Dinkel in Soldotna, Alaska, last summer. In the back room, Dinkel had about a dozen giant halibut tails drying out, all neatly displayed on pedestal bases. After he explained that no one ever wants a 300-pound halibut mounted in its entirety, the tails made sense. My wheels began to turn, and I vowed on the spot that I was going to try this with the next big striper I caught. Well, here it is.

Beef or Venison: Which Tastes Better?38

Video: Bear on Trampoline12
We know. It's an old story. But it's Monday, and who doesn't want to see bears on trampolines on a Monday afternoon? Enjoy ...
No matter how many times you watch this video, it never gets old. The landing is still something to be desired though.
Is This The New World-Record Largemouth?92
Just in from Japan: a new world-record largemouth may have been bested in Lake Biwa.
It's a beauty!
Wisconsin Roadkill Custody Battle23
From The Journal Times:
John J. Longo ate the deer he took from the side of the road in February 2008.
He asked a friend — a Caledonia police officer and taxidermist — to mount its head.
Where I'm from, the officer comes and checks out the roadkill, makes sure it's dead, then lets you take it if you want it. That's it. What you do with the animal from that point on is all okay.

That's an awesome idea. I'd be for mounting a catfish tail that way. Because a catfish's tail is better looking than its face:)
