A Pike Bite

The Calm Before the Storm: What would a video gallery be without one foreign clip? In this one, a fly angler catches a small pike, which he successfully nets and prepares to release.

Then the You-Know-What Hits the Fan: At the last second, the fish turns around and clamps on the angler’s hand before swimming away, leaving him with a painful memory of the catch.

The Check-Your-Underpants Factor: One could argue that the anglers scream is not proportionate to the amount of blood from the bite. But I have no doubt that this probably hurt like a mother, so I’ll give this Euro caster a 6.5.

A couple of comments:

Although the angler did receive a nasty gash from the pike, it did seem at the end of the video that he wasn't too terribly injured, but bad enough nevertheless!

Also, the angler is not german. He is from Holland and that makes him a "crying Dutchmen!"

I think he is very lucky that was not a bigger pike, he could have lost his hand.

A friend of mine was bit by a northern once....funny thing is that the fish's head was cut off already. Apparently it was a nerve reaction from the fish when my friend was playing with its teeth.

rub some dirt on it. when i was in canada, i was talking to a guide who had taken a woman and her husband out. the husband caught a 30inch pike and landed it. while holding it, the woman takes her finger and stuck it into the pike's mouth saying, "look honey, they have teeth." no joke, true story. its a wonder she didnt loose her finger

That is a nasty bite. I never thought about fish biting you when you release them, but now ill watch out, especially with pike, Geez!

That is awesome!! If I had a video of a pike trying to tear my hand off I'd post it too...I try not to let them bite me though. Pike are tough enough fish you don't need to baby them back to life in most cases - from the look of the way the fish got his hand, a little less handling probably would have been acceptable for this release...ouch!

Another fish attacks the fish he's releasing and catches his hand. If you watch it, you can see that the fish he is holding doesn't really move when he gets bitten. A big pike came up and grabbed the fish that was moving on top of the water and caught his hand in the process. Great video. That will be in the back of my mind next time I release a muskie

Great video... good tutorial... don't play around with Northerns... they have lots of teeth. I once had one attack my fingers but I saw him coming in time to pull my fingers out of the water. I hope this guy wasn't a Norwegan, they should know better.

Ow, that would leave a mark! As you may notice it says "snoek vissiers" at the top of the screen. that means "pike fishers" in German. In fact, the word snook comes from the German word for pike, which is snoek.
