Pulled from the story "No-B.S. Accuracy" in the July 2009 issue of Field & Stream, David E. Petzal presents a shooting course guaranteed to make you a better hunter.
I don't have anything agains Petzal, but I really don't see what is so great about this "test". I understand in a hunting situation you should use the best rest you can, but a bipod at 125 yards? Shoot that standing if it's a true test of marksmanship. I don't think this "test" is all that great, but that is just my personal opinion
BigBboy25; At 125+, prone with a bipod is an option. Methinks she took it because she has only fired a gun, what, twice before?!?! I know its an opinion, but yea, 100 is a "stand-and-shoot" unless you luckily find a deer that will wait 40 seconds for you to go prone, extend your bipod and get a sight picture.
So what is the scoring methodology? Dave said every time you hit you get 5 points. Kristyn Brady shot 5@25yds, 5@50yds, 2 ea. @ 125,150,175 & 200, then 5 @ 300yds. I count 25 rounds total. That would be 125 possible points. At the end Dave said Kristyn scored 60 out of 145. Is that 5.8 points per hit? I’m confused. Or did Dave mean to say she scored 60 out of 125?
ever hear of jack o conner. most game i shot gave me 3-5 second to aim and shoot.so do this test under competetion rules or in competetion. but thats level most riflemen never achieve. great for any hunter and probably more practice than some of the people i ve hunted with. key practice practice practice practice or bird hunt when big game season is over..
I like this video. Dave's point is to practice this circuit and shoot the way you would normally shoot while hunting. You don't have all day to pull the trigger in field so don't take all day while you practice. The idea is to improve your shooting and the scoring system is something you can chart over time to see how you're doing. If you don't like how much time Dave allows and/or the scoring system then change it to your taste. Also, if you use a bi-pod when hunting then use it in this course. If you don't, then don't use one.
There's plenty of guys that shoot a box off a bench rest once a year and are convinced they can hit 1 MOA all day long in the field. Dave's trying to get hunters proficient in taking down big game with one humane shot. That is a worthy goal.

Unless it is 125 for the standard round, and he is giving 20 bonus points for that extra 150 yd shot in under 5 seconds.
