Charging Lion

The Calm Before the Storm: A hunting party in Africa stalks a huge male lion and waits until the cat moves into a position for them to fire.

Then the You-Know-What Hits the Fan:
After the hunters shoot at the lion, it charges at a terrifying pace. The hunters get three more shots off, but none were enough to slow the cat down.

The Check-Your-Underpants Factor:
No doubt this one deserves a 10. My heart started racing the second the lion started growling. Try to pause the clip the instant the lion lunges at the hunter: That’s the best way to see just how massive this thing is. Fortunately for the hunter, the lion doesn’t make a direct hit.

All I can say is that #1 they're all lucky big kitty missed. #2 I'm surprised that in all the excitment and seven shots that I counted, no one was accidently shot. #3 They're all lucky it wasn't a cape buffalo.

What was going through the camera man's mind when he was video taping the whole thing! That was the most intense thing I have ever seen. And seriously how did no one get shot.

I have hunted all kinds of game including bears which can be dangerous but a 500 pound cat is still hard to fathom. Were these guys undergunned or unskilled or what? Could have ended really bad for them but fortunately not this time. This video is a great training lesson for hunting dangerous game.

Here's another reason why I sometimes question the wisdom of people that go and bow hunt these and elephants. Most parts in Africa are illegal to bow hunt in, and I think I have an idea why.

This one's been on YouTube for quite a while. I've seen the slo-mo on it and actually at 1:08 the PH that is kneeling broadside to the charging lion drives a bullet through the lion's upper chest (can't see it clearly on tis version)-- that's what causes the lion to miss the hunter. It is also the same PH that puts the lion down as it is running away. In the longer version the PH gets the hunter back up on his feet and he shoots the already downed lion -- I guess to save face and make it "really his trophy".

Ladies and gents: First let me state that I love to hunt and fish, I usually take 2or 3 deer a year for food and the thrill of the hunt. But I can tell you, I was rooting for the lion to get away from those idiotic a--holes. Unless this was a cat who had killed in the area or was causing major livestock problems, what is the purpose of going out an shooting it-just to say that you could, and that you did? It looks to me that this was amateur hour to say the least. No wonder hunting is under attack from all sides-I wish this video would go away;it's an embarassment to hunters. (Right, so shoot the lion after it's dead so you can claim it as your kill???Pulease.......)

There is about a half a heartbeat difference there that could have turned out very differently. One swat or bite and the guy is going to get 50 or so stitches. Soooo Lucky.

I believe that this video was posted quite a while back on at least one hunting forum. Someone more detail oriented than me pointed out what appears to be a fence line in the background. Notice how the lion retreats and then seems to run along some sort of boundary before charging. Does anyone else see this? This hunt was deemed "canned" and a disgrace if memory serves me.

I for one think the guy is lucky. As for the background behind the lion, I would remind the readers that these game ranches can be anywhere from 5,000 to 250,000+ acres. If the lion flees to one of the corners instead of hunkering down in a bush, what else is there to do?

Would like to know how wild that cat really was. Even though they are trying to control/end canned hunting in my country(South Africa)that whole scene looked very iffy.If you want to hunt lions,do it like the Masai, with a spear.
