The SOC661M casting rod is part of a series that has been favored by fishermen for a long time. Our team couldn’t make up their minds about this one. Aside from one reviewer who thought the guide wrapping a bit sloppy (another really liked the guides themselves) the test panel deemed the overall rod of good quality. We then had divergent views ranging from the action being fairly stiff to the rod being too light for medium/heavy classification. That may be a function of the new construction in the series, which has been reengineered with different layup so that less material is needed. One reviewer liked the model for a river rod and felt it could fill in as a pitching stick. Another liked its distance performance, while his test teammate thought accuracy was only average . I’d be proud to have it in my boat, was one advocate’s final appraisal. Outdoor Life Gear Test 2001
