A tough new graphite coupled with a production technique that eliminates weak spots is the hallmark of St. Croix’s 16- model Legend Elite series ($290 to 4310). A new graphite composite delievers high-modulus casting and fighting performance without the brittleness that has plagued some H-M blanks- a feat accomplished in part by the use of 100 percent carbon-matte scrim (the outermost rod wrapping) instead of the usual fiberglass scrim. Another twist: Rather than use a conventional compound taper construction, St. Croix employs a continuous-curve taper from tip to butt (termed Integrated Poly Curve, or IPC), which eliminates the weaknesses suffered at transition points by many rods because of fiber compaction and/or misalignment. The rods are light tough and classy.
