Cave Run Lake

Located less than an hour east of Lexington, 8,270-acre Cave Run Lake is considered by many to be Kentucky's best muskie destination. In 1998, the lake produced the current state-record fish which measured 53 inches and weighed 44.4 pounds. But Cave Run is not just a lake with a few trophies. According to a fishing report published by the Kentucky Department of Natural Resources, the lake supports good numbers of fish, including many over 30 inches. During the fall, most muskies take up residence in the shallow, flooded timber and milfoil. Try casting big crankbaits along the edges in 8 to 12 feet of water. Some of the best fall locations on the lake include Beavercreek, Murder and Leatherwood arms. If you want to troll crankbaits, head for the Zilpo Flats located on the south shore of the main lake. Launch at Clay Lick boat ramp off State Route 1274 to hit these autumn hot spots. Contact: Kentucky Department of Natural Resources (606-784-6872).
