Deer Forecast-East

Colchester

Because older whitetail bucks can be found all over the island province of Nova Scotia, wildlife biologist Tony Nette recommends that hunters targeting trophy bucks locate areas that have seen fresh logging activity. Colchester is a top trophy spot, followed by Hants and Lunenburg counties. As in the rest of eastern Canada, Nova Scotia's deer herd was hit especially hard by last year's severe winter. Nevertheless, the province is experiencing an overall growth in deer numbers, according to Nette, who says that before the spring fawning period the province was home to about 70,000 whitetails. Additionally, the size of Nova Scotia's bucks has been rising. "In the last three years the antler-beam diameter of our yearling bucks has averaged roughly an inch," he says. "This is indicative of excellent health and conditioning, so there's going to be some big deer this year."
