Outdoor Skills - Fishing Q&A

Q: When I flex my spinning rod back and forth, I hear a faint clicking sound. This doesn't seem normal, but I can't figure out what's wrong. -Tom Martin, La Jolla, Calif.

A: That clicking sound means there's something loose. If it's a two-piece rod, try tightening the ferrule joint. One of the rings on a screw-lock reel seat might not be tight, or it could be that one or more of the line guides is coming loose from its mounting. It's also possible that the rod blank itself is cracked, in which case either get it replaced under warranty or throw it away.
