New Hampshire’s southern tier has numerous smallmouth and largemouth bass waters, but those in Cheshire and Hillsborough Counties are among the best. Specifically, Spofford Lake in Chesterfield has excellent habitat for both largemouth and smallmouth bass and a good spread of age classes. Lake Warren in Alstead, Skatutakee Lake in Harrisville, Deering Reservoir in Deering and Otter Lake in Greenfield also warrant a visit. Just north of the Hillsborough County line in Hopkinton, the Hopkinton-Everett Lake Project, a flood control project of the Army Corps of Engineers, encompasses a series of ponds that all hold bass. Rapalas and Rat-L-Traps in silver and blue, and spinnerbaits with silver blades and white or black skirts work well for both species. When the water gets a little roiled, go with fluorescent colors.
