When it comes to fishing the Big Gunpowder Falls, you’ve got options. The Big Gunpowder Falls is a long, winding creek that flows through 16,000 acres of public land below Prettyboy Reservoir in northern Baltimore County. Trout Unlimited (TU) recently declared it one of the top 100 trout streams in the nation. The first seven miles below the dam are strictly catch-and-release and are open only to artificial lures. Small spinners and Rapalas work well. The next 10 miles have no tackle limitations, but varying creel limits apply. The creek is surrounded by Gunpowder Falls State Park, which can be accessed from Exit 27 off Interstate 83. Contact: Gunpowder Falls State Park (P.O. Box 480, 2813 Jerusalem Road, Kingsville, MD 21087; 410-592-2897).
