You don’t have to go far to fight redfish after breakfast at Get-A-Way Adventures Lodge. A short walk to the dock, a quick motor through the Port Mansfield Harbor, and you’re in the heart of Texas’ best inshore fishing-the 550-square-mile Lower Laguna Madre. Shallow-draft fishing skiffs access this ultraskinny water, where you spend the day wading and casting to spotted seatrout, redfish, and flounder. The action can be fast and some of the trout huge. This shallow, grassy, highly saline environment produces the largest population of seatrout and redfish along the entire Texas Gulf coast, and has yielded nearly 57 percent of all the trophy seatrout (30 inches or better) landed in Texas in the past 25 years. The Lodge ¿¿¿ A two-day trout and redfish package for four people costs $1,600 and includes room, board, guides, tackle, fish cleaning, and storage. The Fishing ¿¿¿ Action is good nearly year-round, but spring is best for big trout. A great time to visit is early fall, when the air is cooler and most everyone else is deer hunting. How to Go ¿¿¿ Get-A-Way is located 40 minutes from the Harlingen airport and 55 miles from Brownsville. Contact Bruce or Shirley Shuler at 956-944-4000; www.getawayadventureslodge.com.
