Texas bowhunters can cash in on hunting hundreds of thousands of acres courtesy of the Army Corps of Engineers. Most is land surrounding public lakes. Some have free access; others require a permit issued by each lake’s Corps administrative office for a small fee, usually less than $20. Lakes in the Fort Worth district host some of the better hunting due to the topography of the region. These lakes include Canyon, Lake o’ the Pines, Sam Rayburn, B.A. Steinhagen, Whitney and Wright Patman. Lake Waco is in the mix, but is not open-access; a draw permit system is in place there. Other restrictions apply at different units. Contact: Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District Office (817-978-2705).
