Oahu

One of the most daring fishing opportunities in Hawaii is night-fishing for sharks offshore of Oahu. Each evening at about 10 p.m. charter boats leave Fisherman's Wharf near Waikiki and head offshore. They work the area between Diamond Head and Pearl Harbor for a variety of sharks that range from 30 to over 400 pounds. The most common are white-tip sharks, sand sharks, black-tip sharks and the ferocious fighting lemon shark. The sharks are attracted to blood-soaked chum, and it doesn't take long for them to zero in. Anglers use 50- or 80-pound-class gear with a 600-pound-test steel leader baited with a big chunk of tuna. But these fabulous denizens of the deep are not slated for shark-fin soup-this is a catch-and-release fishery. Bait and tackle is provided on the boats. Charter costs vary, but expect about $100 per night per person if you can get enough friends interested and join your crew to split the costs. Hey-it's worth it at least once for the chance of a lifetime. A fishing license is not required for ocean sport-fishing. Contact: Sportfish Hawaii (877-388-1376).
