Chequamegon Bay

As winter days lengthen with the promise of spring, Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay is one of those places where an angler can catch just about anything. The bay contains a variety of habitat that supports virtually every fish found in Wisconsin's greatest lake. Walleyes, perch, whitefish, coho salmon, brown trout, steelhead and splake are available to anglers who head out from landings at Washburn and Ashland. The best action is usually at dawn and dusk, when anglers set up near channel edges and stream mouths. Shiner minnows fished with a jig are a popular bait. Adventuresome anglers can go farther offshore to jig in deep water for lake trout. Contact: Outdoor Allure in Washburn (715-373-0551); Anglers All in Ashland (715-682-5754).
