Fayette County

The Fayette County stretch of the New River between Prince and the stream's confluence with the Gauley River is prime channel catfish water. The New lies within the state and is part of the New River Gorge National River, but limited road contact means you'll have to walk the railroad beds to jump between quality cat holes. The river's boulder-strewn bed can be troublesome for bottom anglers. Locate sand bottoms and still-water coves, below rapids that edge deeper runs and pools where the channel cats hang out. Things get a bit easier on the bigger, calmer waters from the New River bridge downstream to the Gauley. Top baits include chicken livers and night crawlers.
