Permit hunting offers better odds for public-land gobblers, especially on wildlife management areas like Bonny Dam and some Rocky Mountain Front units. But general tag hunting is quite good, especially for Merriam’s gobblers, in the southwestern counties of Archuleta, La Plata and Montrose. For the Rio Grande subspecies, hunt along cottonwood drainages in Las Animas County. License fees: $10.25 for residents, $75.25 for nonresidents. Contact: Colorado Division of Wildlife (303-297-1192).
