Provincial deer biologist Rod Cumberland contends that New Brunswick holds some of the best trophy-whitetail potential of the entire Northeast. “We’re below our carrying capacity, but when you’re talking about size and overall number of deer, we have some very big deer here,” Cumberland says. “We’re probably one of the best spots for big-antlered bucks in North America right now.” Best bets for trophy whitetails are Wildlife Management Zones 10 and 16 in the western part of the province. Just as good, however, are Zones 20 and 24 in southwestern and south-central New Brunswick. These four zones together accounted for 46 percent of the mature bucks taken last year and some of the biggest trophy racks. The province is capable of producing record-book animals and probably offers Eastern hunters the best chance at tagging a B&C; entry. Nonresidents must hunt with a registered guide in New Brunswick.
