Today’s rifle definitely ranks high in the Good Pawn Shop Deal category. The Remington Model Four (and that’s “Four” not “4”) was a slightly higher-grade version of the Model 7400 gas-operated semiauto made between 1981 and 1987. The Four and the 7400 were both improved versions of the 742. They had 22-inch barrels and came in .243 Winchester, 6mm Remington, .270 Winchester, .280 Remington .30/06, and .308. Like most semiauto hunting rifles, it’s not a MOA tack-driver but shoots to minute-of-deer and, in this, case minute-of-pig just fine.

Hog Hunter’s Model Four

I purchased this .30/06 Model Four a few years ago at a pawn shop for $250. It currently wears a Nikon 3x9x40 scope with BDC reticle. The well-used Monte Carlo stock helps to get a good cheek-weld when sighting through the scope. The barrel appears to have been cut to carbine length after it left the factory and makes the overall package excellent for all-day carry in the thick woods where I find deer and pigs. It can hold about 2-inch, 100-yard groups with Remington CoreLokt factory loads and used this combination a couple of years ago to take my largest pig to date. I also bagged another pig and a small whitetail buck within the next two hours with that same rifle.
