It’s calving season for elk in Banff National Park. Unfortunately for the elk, this time of year coincides with the beginning of the tourism season when the area sees an influx of visitors. Cow elk are especially protective of their young, so when you add sightseers into the mix, there’s the potential for conflict or even injury.

Fortunately, the park’s resource conservation specialists created a technique they nicknamed the ‘scoop and run’ for dealing with such situations. In a video recently posted on YouTube, they explain the technique, which involves blanketing the calf and physically carrying it into the forest while keeping momma at bay. They use the method to move a calf into a less congested, safer area in the video below.
