Last week a Virginia man and his sons came home to discover that their six-year-old dog, Blue, had suffered a vicious attack, which left wounds over its body. At first, the family believed a raccoon was responsible, until a veterinarian told them that, in fact, a bear likely caused the injuries.
Fortunately, Blue escaped with only scratches, according to NBC4 Washington. Without a witness, though, it’s difficult to know for sure what happened.
“This dog was very, very lucky to have escaped with its life,” owner Richard Kelly said. “We could have come home to find a dead dog with its fur torn up.”
The Washington Post reports that officials will monitor the wooded area near the family’s home where they believe the attack occurred.
