A Georgia man reeled in a new state-record swordfish on May 31.
It took a 90-minute fight, but Brendin Page of Savannah landed a 205-pound, 8-ounce swordfish that beat the previous state record by nearly 120 pounds.
Page caught the fish while 15 miles off the Savannah shore, according to the Savannah Morning News.
Page was fishing aboard Captain Kent Phillips’ Slo-N-EZ when he hooked the fish in about 1,500 feet of water. When he got back to shore, he had to travel to a nearby seafood market to have its weight certified.
“Finding certified scales is often the biggest challenge for anglers wishing to enter a fish for consideration,” said Jeff Mericle, Georgia Coastal Resources Division saltwater gamefish records coordinator. “We tell fishermen to check with local seafood markets since they typically have a Georgia Department of Agriculture certified scale.”
The Georgia CRD maintains men’s and women’s record categories for 58 species of fish. The previous state record was an 86-pounder caught in 1980.
