Fly tiers often use a whip finish tool to create the knot at the head of their fly, but here, renowned fly innovator Rob Russell shows how you can make the same, durable knot with two fingers.
When you finish your fly, simply take several inches of thread and wrap it around your index and middle fingers. Make five twists, then slide the loop over the eye of the fly, and cinch tight. Repeat the process to create a double whip finish that’s secure enough to last without applying head cement. This trick saves time, and money, at the tier’s bench.
