Fly casting is tricky, especially for young anglers. Here, Katie Cole of the National Fishing in Schools Program offers a tip that helps kids actually see how much line should be out the end of the rod when they’re learning to cast.

Katie simply suggests using a marker to show that 18-20 foot sweet spot distance where kids can actually start loading the rod and making good casting loops. If they can see it, eventually they’ll start to feel the correct mechanics of the cast… starting short, and building distance with practice.
