Earlier this week Trout Unlimited Launched the Wild Steelhead Initiative which in their words is, “an ambitious and hopeful project to protect and restore the wild steelhead and the fishing opportunities they provide throughout their native range in Alaska, California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.”

With it comes a far reaching media campaign, a new website called Wild Steelheaders United and a fantastic little movie that my friend Josh Duplechian crafted on the subject. I personally have only had the privilege of catching a few large wild steelhead in my life, but I can honestly say without a doubt they were fish that changed my life simply by holding them. When you consider what these fish go through to simply exist and procreate it is astounding that they are even around at all. I mean, they are basically big rainbow trout that hold their own with baddest creatures in the ocean then migrate hundreds and sometimes closer to a thousand miles inland to return to their spawning habitat. If you have ever caught these majestic creatures you know how special they are and owe them a little help. If you aspire someday to feel the tug of a wild steelhead the same applies to you. Take a moment watch the movie and visit Wild Steelheaders United to get educated on the plight of wild steelhead and how you can help.
