I think we’re about due for another mouse in the vintage tackle contest, don’t you? This fine specimen (which has me day dreaming about warm summer nights on the pond) was submitted by Josh Wiedel, who bought it at an auction. Looking at the rope tale, I thought perhaps this was homemade or custom, so off it went to Dr. Todd Larson of The Whitefish Press and “Fishing For History” blog for the skinny.

Dr. Todd says:

_”Collectors love critters — frogs, crayfish, birds, and especially mice attract tons of collectors and lots of interest. You’ve got a very popular mouse manufactured by the legendary Creek Chub Bait Co. of Garrett, Indiana. It’s called a Lucky Mouse and it was advertised as new in 1929. One of the unique things about this lure is the “reverse” mouth piece, slanted in the opposite direction as most lures. It’s a nifty topwater lure and came in at least six colors. Although condition on your lure is not great, it should still be worth $30-$40. A very nice find! To see an intro advertisement for the Creek Chub Lucky Mouse, click here.”

Nice find, Josh. Unless you need the cash or want to display this lure, I’d sharpen up those hooks, wait for the warm weather, and see how many bucketmouths will take a shot in the dark. Thanks for sending and keep an eye on your mailbox, because there’s a set of Berkley Aluminum Pliers headed your way.

If you’ve already sent me photos of your vintage tackle, keep checking every Thursday to see if I chose it for an appraisal by Dr. Todd. If you haven’t and want to enter the contest, email photos of your old tackle to fstackle@gmail.com, along with your name, mailing address, and story of how you acquired the gear. If I use it in a Thursday post, you get a pair of Berkley Aluminum Pliers (above) worth $50.
