When I was a kid I loved building models. I mean, the decals were rarely on straight and my paint jobs weren’t the best, but I still had a lot of fun doing it. The whole point of models, at least I always thought, was building the things you dreamed of one day owning, such as a wicked sports car or in my case, a fishing boat. I guess when you’re a young lad in Japan, you dream of one day owning a 1,000-pound bluefin tuna, because a fish like that will make you a very rich man over there. But until you’re old enough to work on a grimy commercial fishing boat, you’ll have to settle for this Tsukiji tuna model hanging above your bunk bed.

What’s most amusing is that this tuna model is made to be deconstructed to clearly show all the prime cuts for sushi. Considering that the mistreatment of a tuna, or making one wrong cut can mean the difference between half a million bucks and a few grand, I suppose you’ve got to start them young. If I had this model at 7 or 8 years old, it would have been laying in the dirt with my rubber sharks as I tried to hook it from the porch (the boat) with a paperclip on a string.

If you’re considering this for little Johnny for Christmas, keep in mind this model carries a $240 price tag, because it appears the Japanese even put high price tags on plastic tuners. You can checkout more photos and read the full story about the model on the Technbob website. Have a great weekend.
