I’ve gotten several reports lately regarding smaller bucks tickling antlers, but on the southern plains, the big boys are starting the sparring season a bit early. Check out this series of photos from the Chain Ranch, where two nice whitetails had a late-night rumble last week. From the looks of it, this wasn’t just a little playground spat, but a full-fledged scrap. Sept. 30 seems a bit early for that serious of a fight.
I’d bet the bucks probably went back to being buddies once it was done, or are at will least tolerate each other at the feeder for another week or two. But, it does illustrate rattling could be an effective technique as we approach mid-October.
