Like any endeavor, woodworking has its trends and according to some sources, carvers are really into whittling spoons right now. There's even an annual International Spoonfest, which I regrettably missed last August. Although I probably won't make the 2015 Spoonfest either, the idea of carving my own spoons actually appeals to me. I use wooden spoon almost everyday in my kitchen, and having one I made myself would be pretty cool. A homemade wooden spoon would actually make a great gift, so you might consider getting to work on one today if you're wondering what to get that wild-game cook who has everything. The guy in this video makes it look doable for guys like me who aren't good with tools.
