Opening weekend of the Texas gun season was slow for most hunters I talked to, but faithful Rut Report reader Cody Lowe was certainly an exception. He shared this account of his hunt in the Texas Panhandle:

“Opening weekend of the rifle season proved to be a success. Movement was high on opening day, but the wind killed it Sunday for us. The Saturday evening hunt was warm with little activity until right at sunset. I had a nice 3 ½-year-old 9-point and a yearling buck come in to my feeder. A different buck, a big 9-point (main frame 8 with kicker on his right G2), and a high-horned, tight racked 8-point were working their way towards me. I watched the big 9-point work two scrapes at about 150 yards. I was waiting for him to step into a clearing allowing me to get a better look at him and his age. I realized he was a buck I have pictures of on my game camera. The pictures I had of him were taken at a different stand one mile away. Once I realized it was him, I made the decision to take him. He stepped out into the full open and began to work another scrape. I took the shot at 130 yards and put down the buck. He’s my personal best to date. He was bigger than I guessed him to be, especially considering he is just a main frame 8-point. We gross-scored him at 146 6/8. The better rains this year have really proved to be a benefit on antler mass on the bucks we have seen so far.

“At the same time, a friend of mine had the opportunity at a different stand at a nice 10-point that we have game camera pictures of as well. We guessed this 10-point to be 4 ½ years old and elected to give him one more year. Hopefully the neighbors will do the same if he manages to cross the property line.”

Congratulations to Cody on a fine buck!
