The pinnacle of the rut has been reached in virtually all Western regions and a lot of mature bucks have been paying the ultimate price. Weather for the most part has been favorable, bucks have been on the move, and hunters have been setting their sight pins and lowering their crosshairs on some exceptional whitetails. Although rut activity will still be good in the coming days, as bucks seek additional opportunities to breed in many areas out West, it will start winding down overall. Hunters with a tag left in their pocket should start concentrating on food sources—especially on those cold, snow-swept days the West is known for.
