_[As] much as I like the NRC’s changes, I think the commission shot itself in the foot by spending months taking testimony from hunters about proposed crossbow rules it was considering then adopting an entirely different and un-debated set of rules. . . .

[The original plan was to allow] older hunters to use crossbows during the late archery season in December and then only in the southern Lower Peninsula (Zone 3). What it passed was something wildly different. . . .

The new rules allow crossbows statewide during any season in which a firearm may be used, for both big and small game; during any gun or archery season in Zone 3, and by anyone 50 years of age or older during the Oct. 1-Nov. 14 archery season.
