Like any casting technique, flipping entails several steps, each of which must be done correctly and in one, fluid motion. Cincinnati bass pro and flipping expert Joe Thomas has broken this cast down to its essentials–and has identified a common error:

“One big mistake a lot of people make is grabbing the line with their free hand. This not only cuts down on lure speed and distance, but also robs accuracy.” Instead, Thomas says, encircle the line with your thumb and middle finger (as shown at left) and let the line slide freely between them. This makes for a much more fluid motion and will improve your flipping. Try it. –MARK HICKS
