As far as I’m concerned, when it comes to game-animal news stories, the stranger the better. This one , however, has so many odd and disparate part that I can’t summarize it coherently. So I’ll just give you the highlights.
- A “show herd” of about 60 bison being delivered from South Dakota to California’s Chumash Indian Tribe broke out of a stock trailer.
- Three that were “darting in and out of traffic lanes” were shot—apparently without official authorization—by California Highway Patrol. (Imagine John and Ponch shooting buffalo.)
- One was struck and killed by a Mercury Marquis driven by a 64-year-old man
- Referring to the damaged vehicle, a CHP spokesperson said: “It was pretty much crumpled. I’ve worked a lot of cow-car collisions and cars don’t do well against giant cows.”
