From the Republican-American:
James Galvin killed a female, 200-pound bear with a 12-gauge shotgun . . . [after the bruin] chased his dog and then made threatening moves toward him, he said.
The Department of Environmental Protection ruled the shooting was justified. Black bears are protected and shooting them is illegal, but there are exceptions. . . .
"I got a couple anonymous letters calling me basically a no good piece of crap," he said. "I didn't want to shoot the bear. I didn't need any more stress in my life."_
